Good evening Radio Friends,
Well I'm thinking about adding a small amp to my radio setup in my car. The amp I'm looking at is a Texas star modulator V- plus v with a set of 2879 transistors, it does 100 watts max, the power is variable and has auto SSB built in,there only asking $189.00 + free shipping and it's in my price range! What I need to know(since it's been about almost 15 years since I ran a amp) yes I know it's illegal, but what I need to know is if I can just plug and play so to speak or do I have to have my radio opened up to have the dead key lowered for it to work properly! I have a Wilson 1000 so I know it can handle the power,I just need to know about hooking it up and so forth! I welcome any suggestions and or comments, Many thanks in advance and God Bless!!

AmericanEagle...how about some information on the radio you will be using? Radio make/model what is the current dead key and swing output.

The only mod v amp I've ever seen uses a single 2290 - which is good for around ~80w/peak. IIRC, they are usually used to drive a bigger amp. If you don't have test equipment (50 ohm dummy load and watt meter) and never worked on a radio before, i would just leave it alone and not use it, or take it to a reputable shop that knows what the heck they are doing to do the job right.
Or, you risk frying the amp (common thing that happens) because you overdrive it and the final/pill snaps . . .
A 2 pill 2879 amp will put out around ~230w clean watts/peak.

If you are talking about this on EBAY
https://www.ebay.com/itm/BRAND-NEW-...123796285500?_trksid=p2385738.m4383.l4275.c10

It has one 2879 and I don't care what it says in the listing, this amplifier is not set up for sideband. None of the single transistor amps are.

If you want an amp for SSB use you will want at least a two transistor amp.

AE575 , Probably just me but if you decided to go that route , you might have been better off buying a 980 that has that small amp built in . I think they remove the internal speaker to install it ? Not sure what they call them , I haven't seen one in a while . Is it " Stinger " ? This way it would have all been done for you already for a few extra $'s .Probably not as many watts , but ... jmo 73 & God Bless , Leo

If you watch the video be sure to notice the sound quality on SSB. The AD=203 Does not have SSB delay. It sounded pretty bad to my ears.

He does what he does. Problem I have with him is that he disables comments on his YouTube videos. Even stranger, he plasters his comments on other YouTube videos with criticism and self agrandizing promotion.

To me, that's very weak and lame.

Yup.
The Admins here had to shut down many heated threads due to that 'dude' . . . best to keep him and his 'followers' off of this forum . . . JMHO . . . Admins have enough to do w/o that noise . . .

Mud , I Totally Agree ! It never was disclosed in my bye that it was & SRC radio , would it have made a difference then ? Probably not , but after being a member here for a " Few " years I "might" reconsider . Like said my radio , garden hosed off or not works flawlessly . Nothing but great comments on it w/ my Silver Eagle or SSK . One thing straight 11w max from a 2k on Am , anybody that tells you more ... lying or has a crazy dual final set up in it . Just me rambling ! 73 & God Bless , Leo
