Time is now to revive CB Radio

Current CB/Export radio’s don’t — to my knowledge — feature detachable remote control heads.

I believe there have been a few in the past which sort of fit that niche.

OTOH, the Uniden BC906 wireless microphone might serve as a way to keep a radio concealed from prying eyes while still allowing the operator use of the equipment.

Experience should be enough to set radio controls so that changes aren’t needed for most daily drives

I’ve bought one of these to pair with a Uniden 980, though I haven’t set it up for use.

There are several threads where posts about owner use is favorable (highly).

And, I guess a guy could attach a longer microphone cord to accomplish much the same.

A seatback organizer — suitably modified — in the same color as the seats themselves is potentially a way to keep a radio concealed.

I’d feel more comfortable with a wooden box to contain the radio. Allowing securement of coax & power, and allowing ventilation.

I’d want nothing visually “emerging” from the contraption that helps signal its presence. (No other use but perhaps some spare radio supply/gear storage).

A slender, vertical radio mount (so to speak). Under a fabric cover the color of the passenger seat back. Substantial use of Industrial Velcro for attachment besides straps at headrest & seat cushion.

Allows one to operate controls by touch.

Here’s an example of the many for sale out there:

B3D3E98A-C165-4AFA-87CE-6BD48BA21084.jpeg

An removable antenna on an NMO mount, otherwise. (Where low-key is an ideal). NMO-27 Larsen.

A (7’) mag mount otherwise.

Now, up above that seatback install, one would want to hang his FROGG TOGG rain-suit.

Drapes down over Radio nicely.

Ha!

I think I just solved how to finish the gift of a radio rig to my son & daughter-in-law that’s been in the works the past year. Just wouldn’t finish . . . to close itself off at a natural point.

1). One SSB rig for the house. Power supply and a basic dipole. (Plus books; these two are brainiacs).

2). Another for the car (and now: how to overcome potential objections to its presence by either party).

Have almost all the pieces besides concealed mount as above.

Been buying tools & supplies for everything from RF Bonding to installing Anderson PowerPoles. My three vehicles, plus this extra.

The install will such so as to run a more substantial Radio than an 11-Meter SSB rig. .

Re-state: I think I finally heard what was being whispered.

“Be still, and listen”.

Was in Walcott Radio the other day. This item (#Radiobag) hanging on an end shelf. Reminded me of this thread. Price is right ( $12.95). Just right size.

The attraction is that it looks cheap. Lay it in car somewhere and put some kids stuff around it. Hide that it’s carrying something the size of a radio.

Or use it as above post described. Velcro to seat back and strap in place. Opening towards driver. Cut the bottom to allow cabling. Hang some (Goodwill-sourced) workshirts over it.

(That’s the generic AM-only, COBRA 29 “Classic”, shown)

Here one of the same physical-size , a Galaxy 979 AM/SSB unit that’s a solid, reliable performer (meaning it stands up to the hard-riding life of a truck driver CB radio).

I think the legitimate concern of theft can be worked around. Today’s cars not nearly so easy to see into as a 1970s car.

I have an expensive bag (pack) I use for tablet, etc. It stands out. This doesn't.

Power can run towards engine along console under carpet. Coax towards passenger door sill.

As always, the Mobile Install Bible:

An external speaker would be needed with radio in bag or box.

For a scanner or CB I wouldn’t go less quality than this:

Uniden BC20. (4-3/4” square)

Amplified, with a Noise Blanker switch. $30.

Audio is better than the comparable Cobra.

The used market has plenty of choices. See threads or posts on Motorola and Kenwood mobile speakers made for professional Two-Way (public service).

.

Here’s another seat-back option: a rigid-mount panel.

8BB9402D-6B3F-4826-B467-FF4D9BB2B4FF.jpeg

Plenty of ways to utilize different attachment devices. For radio and panel to seatback (or to seat front)

Again, underneath a shirt or jacket hanger.

Plenty of space for radio & speaker in a bag. Wireless mic. Antenna on quick-disconnect. (Short Larsen/Laird/Browning).

And now: space for tacticool underwear & mall ninja wraparound shades!

Operator” fake beard & fingerless gloves!

In seriousness, rain suit or umbrella, hat, etc.

There are those carrying locked & loaded neon Super Soaker water-pistols . . but keep stink juice separate till target sited.

Panel-mount could be fitted to a flat-bottom bag for removal, gear attached. Or a zip-front backpack book bag.

No reason this couldn’t also be part of a Go Box system

Security of belongings for any vehicle is (again), not telling a story to an outside observer.

— A CB radio (many versions & sizes) can be concealed while mounted for use with some creativity using DIY or off-shelf accessories.

— Could be a single part of something larger.

— Some darker window tint on rear doors, and ordinary-appearing “cover”.

— A capped NMO mount for a Larsen NMO27C (49” tall)

There’s possibly a member here who was the one recently cited for driving the multi-occupant lanes with his sex doll badged as crash test dummy and in the above. Light saber port arms.

Pro510XL fitted underarm.

It all (uhm) folds up into a surplus USN-numbered cadaver bag lays out on the rear floor of the van.

Story is, he’s been ready years for the final showdown.

Pump & Dump: it ain’t just a phrase, . . . readiness is a way of life

Never stolen.

(Top that).

Those are pretty decent with an external antenna. I bought a pair for my two son's last Christmas and they're using 'em daily.

— Any views on headset use? That looks like the way to use one.

— Ever tried in a car? Comparison to a typical CB as to range & overall goodness?

— Any comments on re-charge time & standby?

— Where car is the base, a pair of these might be useful.

Thx

Not that would ever happen.... I'm sure it won't.
It would be nice if FM were allowed in the 11m band. I'm not smart enough to know if there is some technical reason why the FCC won't allow it. From what I understand it works in other countries.

I think a lot of people these days prefer "cleaner audio experiences". You have to have a taste for it to sit and listen to the howls on AM. SSB is cleaner but still you have to be willing to fiddle with clarifiers to get it dialed in just right. FM? From what I've seen in the 2m band since I've been licensed... you turn it on and as long as you can reach the other station you are golden. Much cleaner copy.

Nowadays most just "marvel" at the cell phone and it is a fine technological advance. The problem is.... when you are blowing down the road at 65 and come over a rise and see a wall of brake lights.... just WHO do you pick up the phone and dial to see what is happening ahead of you.... right NOW ???? Nobody. And that is the difference that they either don't understand or, more likely, don't care about.

But those who just have the "interest"....... enamored with the idea of "wow.... I pick up this microphone, push this button..... and like magic...... other people in the area hear me! I can hear them too!".......there is just nothing like it. but when you tell that young grandson about it ....he smiles and says "great grandpa" and goes back to his laptop...gets in a chat room with people from Europe, Australia..... all over the world. He just doesn't see "radio" the same way.

I guess I'm just raving on...... I'll shut up.

FM would be great for blowing up Cheap CB Amps because they will not handle all of the dead carriers since FM does not Swing. It would greatly reduce the output as well & since when does anyone care about the Rules on the CB Band?

I'll try to get them 'em via text in the next couple days to see what recharge time they're going that route (both started off using the cig. adapter). They don't use headsets, both have them in their vehicle (Son #1 in small pickup, Son #2 in the family SUV) with mag mount antennas. I bought a couple old 100mw RS walkies-talkies for the grand-kids. Last I heard, my Son was on the 2nd floor of the house using the Midland as a walkies-talkie while talking the my grandson while he pedaled around on this bike.
