I talked to WA6URY on 10 meters today, and he told me he was running one of these new amps with a Kenwood TS480 and a SteppIr beam. Man, did this guy have a great signal and audio! I didn't know much about the amp, but looked it up to see what it's all about. Only two mosfets to get 1.5 kW... wow!

Here are a couple of links:

One thing I really noticed about the audio was there was no cutting off/cutting on that is noticeable with a lot of amps. It was just very smooth the whole time. Do any of you guys know much about these? I know they are brand spanking new...

Tokyo High Power has been around for many years and makes some nice stuff. There are MOSFETS out now that run over a kilowatt each BTW. Not sure what you mean by amps cutting out. The ops could have been using VOX I suppose which sounds choppy. I hate VOX for that very reason. CB amps can sound choppy but that is a product of being made cheaply and poor operation. If I could afford to have some THP products I would grab them.

I knew they had been around, but this particular amp is brand new to the market. It's pretty amazing to me that they are able to get that much power out of two Mosfets. I am guessing that VOX is what causes the choppiness, but I've heard quite a few stations that did it, and had tons of fan noise. He even commented about how quiet the amp ran, and that it barely made any fan noise at all. I certainly could not hear it over his audio. And yeah, I'd love to have an amp like that too... but I'll have to win the lottery first!

The Choippiness on 11m is commonly caused by amplifiers using RF switching to activate the amp on SSB. When you stop talking or pause the amp can turn off and then turn on again when you talk again which can make the audio sound choppy if the operator has a lot of pauses. On the better (Ham) amps the amps are switched on from the radio so as long as the ptt is depressed the amp in in tx mode so you can pause as long as you like and the amp relays will not cut out.

We are talking about a "ham" amp, ( note the operator is talking about 10 meters) not a Green Lizard 250 2 "pill" this is a Amp that makes 1.5K from two Real RF power Transistors.

Tokyo High Power is in no way your typical CB amp

Actually ALL commercial ham amplifiers that operate below 2m are required to be hard switched and not carrier operated. Even the Mirage 6m amps have to have a slight modification to enable carrier operation of the change over realy.

I heard Motor Mouth Maul discussing with someone about I guess hard switching. The guy he was talking to had a hum in his audio. MMM mentioned that he would key down the amp and then key up the radio. Is this the same thing?

that doesn't sound exactly correct.

I haven't talked to him lately tho, the last time I personally had contact with him was about his CB A.M. 3rd harmonic being on 28.380:oops:

proper RF switching (COR) should not cause a hum
