Top Gun Quad 5

My lincoln ii gets great audio reports. I can make dx contacts with a little 4ft antenna even when it is extremely busy on 38lsb. I can get called on Channel 28 as well sometimes. I get compliments on the audio. However the receive is awful at times on sideband with strong signals. I get a speaker full of static when i am on 38lsb with somebody close by or a strong dx signal from any am frequency. AM recieve is fine, no complaints.
Neat little radio. I just wish the receive was like my old Uniden (President) Grant. Never have that problem with my Uniden 980 or Magnums45 either.

That would not surprise me. Look at how good a Stryker 955 sounds when set up right! By great, I mean the AM audio by CB standard. The price is insane and it is a Chinese radio with a different face, not a unique board or design. So I would imagine the company that makes these does not reinvent the wheel constantly! I know I have the parent company that makes most of these someplace on my laptop but I am not interested in purchasing directly or having them do a design for me.

Most of these radios are made by one company maybe 2 in China. They make a lot of different products so it is super easy to put someone else's name and a slightly different faceplate. The AM only Stryker models used to be sold under another brand by Yeti.Com as an example. The Magnum 1 was sold under a different name for a while.

I will never pay top dollar for anything made in China that is a generic design re-branded so Stryker will never see my money they want too much for their stuff. There are too many other Chinese radio's that you can buy for far less. I expect well designed unique or original designs if someone wants top dollar. If all you are going to do is slap your name on something and bodge in a few capacitors get lost!

Sadly we will never get anything like the Uniden Grant XLT, Cobra 148 GTL, 858uPd chassis's ever again. Junk encoders, crappy code, terrible deep menus is about all we will get from now on.

Too many in this game are less than genuine with too many lie's! They have the ethics and morality of a used car salesman in an orange suit with a cowboy hat and snakeskin boots on. Products come and go and change names. It is comical in a lot of ways.

got the quad 5 today turned it on checked out the radio. when i felt ok with it i put it in the truck and went for a ride first call got 5 replies. great response cannot give much of a review now however im sure this will become my favorite radio once i get use to it. putting up a base station antenna this week once that is done i'll figure out this radio and give a better review. i;ve been into ham radio since the early 80;s first cb then ham. looking forward to what others have to say about this radio also.see ya next week with my full thoughts about this quad 5

Welcome! I have the Anyone 5555 in my truck and I think it is about the same thing as the Quad 5. Tons of features in this radio and they seem to be better thought out than a lot of radios today. I use an Astatic 636 on mine. The adjustable mic gain on the radio I turned up slightly. It's one of the menu settings. Also turned the AM modulation up some, left the ALC as is. On the Anytone I had to disconnect one of the wires in the mic plug for the Astatic. I think I read that the Quad 5 doesn't have this problem. Might want to verify this if you want to try a different mic.

This is what it says about the MD-1:

Now the same Top Gun Modulator MD-1 and Compressor CP-1 circuits used in the new Magnum radios are available for most other 10-meter and many CB radios. Full tone, clear, high swing audio (AM) modulation is achieved with the addition of these two fully assembled micro circuit boards. While the Top Gun Modulator works only in AM, the Top Gun Compressor works in AM, FM, and SSB keeping the modulation at peak performance in all these modes.

i got the quad 5 about 1 month ago. im starting to love this radio. i get nothing but good reports back from eveyrone i talk with. i have used many cb and ham radios over the years and i will say this is a keeper.

No matter how superb the audio if you talk SSB compression is always needed in harsh conditions like pile-ups.

A good compressor is just as helpful as going from 4 watt's to 100 watts is. When added to any amplifier it can make the difference between being heard and not being heard.

I have never used Topgun gear so I have no idea how effective those products are. I know my SP-1a, Ten-Tec 715 and other compressors and voice processors are worth every penny on SSB and they can also sound good on AM. More importantly they allow you to use all of the power you have more efficiently and they allow you to be understood clearly even if the audio might sound flat.

What good is sounding great with HI-FI audio if your not getting out, or your amps can not be used efficiently. I do not want to put out a 1/4w carrier at 300% modulation hi-fi audio signal from my radio into a 1 transistor amp to feed a 2 transistor amp to feed a 6 transistor amp driving my 10,000 watt amp into Laser 500 beams! LOL

I know guys with some fantastic audio that with out an amp even with a nice omni directional base antenna 30+ feet up can not talk 5 miles away with out an amplifier. Worst yet most the people they talk too do not have the ability to hear their hi-fi audio on their base or mobile radio's so it is wasted on most.

I on the other hand can normally talk 20 miles to 60 miles from my mobile to other mobiles and bases so long as they have decent antenna. That is with a single transistor amp normally set up to only swing to about 50 watts 90% of the time and only allowing it to swing to 100 watts on AM if I absolutely have too.

I like to talk a lot! I like to chew the rag with other old guys. I use a dipole in my attic at home. I am thinking about setting up a ground plane but stealth so not insanely high.

Since I left Georgia I just have not lived anyplace that really required a lot of power to talk and be heard. Most old guys in my area have big beams and run fairly cheap 100-300 watt amplifiers at home and in their cars. Most run barefoot 90% of the time. When I lived in Ga in the 1990's Deer Hunter 100's, TS 350, 500, 667 and Sweet 16's were as common as rain drops.

I just picked up a Quad 5 Friday. Happened to be delivering in Strattanville, Pa. so had to stop at Bob's! Well.......I walked out with a new radio! Unfortunately upon installing the radio at home it seems the NB/ANL doesn't work on SSB! Works fine on AM. Is this normal? Just wan't to make sure I'm not stupid before I send it back.
