tower climbing

why should we be worried about their safety if they aren't?

I understand what you mean by that ........to a point. How about for the same reason we should care about the way the OTHER guy is driving his car and whether or not he is drunk? Or how about why we should care if a nine year old girl is allowed to fire a full auto Uzi at gun range? Sometimes it's not always just the stupid people that pay the price. When shit happens, all too often the smart and obedient people are forced into more and more regulations needlessly.Stupid people should be protected just as much as anyone else. Besides.....I might be walking under a tower like that when one of those idiots falls and kills ME. Then I will REALLY be pissed. I have been around tower riggers quite a bit in my career and can understand why they want to free climb but cannot understand why they feel it is worth the risk.

I remember reading where there are specific situations that free climbing is allowed. Actually, I seem to remember it being in a video. The climber was discussing regulations as he climbed. When he got to a specific point in the climb that transitioned differently, he explained, that it was the only point on that tower where free climbing was permitted.

Note where it says "As required under the OSH Act, when working on existing communication towers, employees must be provided with appropriate fall protection, trained to use this fall protection properly, and the use of fall protection must be consistently supervised and enforced by the employer. Fall hazards are obvious and well known, and OSHA will consider issuing willful citations, in appropriate cases, for a failure to provide and use fall protection. States with their own occupational safety and health plans may have additional requirements."

This was in a letter from OSHA to communications providers in February of this year.

One of the members here works with a company that installs new equipment on cell towers. I know what ever regulations that are in place he would make sure that his climbers comply.

There is are no requlations that I have seen that say "free climbing" is allowed. If you cannot safely be 100% tied off always to the tower, you don't go up it. There are certain mounts (boom mounts) that are not supposed to be climbed on either. There have been quite a few deaths this year as a result of not being properly tied off 100% percent. I do this everyday for a living, I don't climb, but I have a climber that goes up 2-4 towers a day some days and it's always the same, 100% tie off always! Our company has Their own safety division that does random checks of crews. I am certified to rescue and have been up a few towers, it's no joke that's for sure and you only get one chance! There are plenty of instances where we have to call in a man lift or crane as the antennas or lines are not accessable safely from the tower. These guys free climbing are taking thier own lives at risk, guess you have to ask yourself how much you value your life vs the Rush of doing it? I value my life! JMO. God bless

Some contradictions here. Why should we implement more protective regulations when the net effect is just what you say, "smart and obedient people are forced into more and more regulations needlessly," but those regulations are typically just a little further reaching.

We should not care the same because the consequences are vastly different. If the idiot is dumb enough to fall off the tower, that is on him. You, CK, will become aware of that, being the smart obedient person you are, and will likely avoid the fall zone, lest you get what you deserve.

Now, I'm going to go care about the RF exposure of that guy bleeding all over the band playing the stooper bowl...

How many times has government enacted legislation designed to protect us from ourselves because a few stupid people ruined it for the rest? I only have to offer up anti cell phone use while driving laws as only one example. Why do we need a helmet law when people know they should be wearing one on a motorcycle works too.

Don't forget, its a sue happy world! Some regulations are there to cover companys asses.
I don't know about tower climbing, but in any industrial type plant, or construction site, OSHA regulations state you must use fall protection anytime over 6 ft. That incudes ladders, scaffold, platforms etc.
Tower climbing looks pretty wild though, reminds me of iron workers doin the "skywalk" across 6 or 8in wide beams 1000 ft in the air
