I have an circuit board D201 with a BM board number of 17020-0 on the circuit board. I have a couple spare BM boards from late model D201As. The number on them are 17029-A, this board it a little wider on the filter side than the old one. Just the space past the pins are wider, it will plug in. Question 1. Does anyone know if there are differences in these boards and if it is safe to try it?
FL-200 numbers are a little different, but i didn't think that would matter. The old one is marked 7701 the newer is 7705.
had to edit because I am blind.

The pins on the original D201 with the VOX control on the front are round and larger than all the subsequent production versions.

The 'circuit board' D201 radios use a completely-different pin and socket type for the BM board. They're just not compatible.

There are some differences between the 23-channel circuit-board radio's BM and the 40 channel D201A. Pretty sure the 40-channel BM came in at least two versions. I haven't tried to mix and match, so you're on your own trying to substitute them.

There are two different boards for the D201A 40 channel radio. They both are marked 17029-A. The early one has L203 on the far right-hand side of it. The second version doesn't have L203, but has a transistor with some caps and resistor changes. Also, 14.4 VDC was added to pin 2 of the chassis connector and a yellow wire run across the bottom of the BM board from pin 2 to power the transistor. The early board will work in a D201 23 channel radio, but the second version won't work very good without adding voltage to pin 2 of the chassis connector.
