TRC-457

Finished. That was a pain. Far more than it should have been to clean up. Someone I think had replaced that with like tet cap previously as there was huge BLOB of solder .... had to clear a bunch away before operations could commence.20231110_145944.jpg20231110_152624.jpg20231110_152627.jpg20231110_152707.jpg20231110_152727.jpg20231110_152749.jpgIMG_20231109_002319.gif

You will need to recap the entire radio. The newest 457's are from the early 1980's making them at least 40 years old (or older).........well past time for new caps.

I have three 457's and all three have stopped working in the last few years. All three need to be recapped. Two of them have transmit audio problems (one clips, the other has really crunchy audio). The third one lost both rx and tx.

I probably won't bother fixing them as they are only a 12 watt radio and it's much cheaper to buy a new Anytone radio or used ham rig, especially if one considers that time is money and a lot of time is required to recap an old radio!
Plus as a bonus the new radios have much higher stock power output and a lot more frequencies that are easier to access than a modded 457.

I'm retired

I'm retired

Klondike Mike, who is a member on this site, sells the cap kits for those radios and many others............maybe drop him a PM.
If you are retired and have the time it would be a fun project as it's an easy radio to work on, and it'll be good for another 30 or 40 years after you recap it.

I'm retired/disable have time on my hands lol I'll take the time to rest cap .. Ordered a kit from Klondike Mike's.. Otherwise I'll keep it stock except for peaking. I had one for a while back in the day and sold it for a Tram D300. Just got one of them to running.. I have an Icom 706mx111 a friend gave me with the mars mod done.. Should hold me a while.. I plan on purchasing a new base in the future for now these will do.. I love the radios.. Going to refer my dads D201A. And use that on location.. Was great for talking skip.

Actually, the TRC449, 457,and 458 were only made in 1977 and 78. In 1979 the PD858 board was discontinued and the MB8719/MB8734 board was introduced. The TRC450 and 490 replaced the 449 and 458. There was no replacement for the 457.
