TRC-458 sounds tinny / tight / compressed, low modulation...

I got my TRC-458 today in the mail... however it just seems weak...

the modulation is only getting a MAX of 75%

I put it side by side with a TRC-449 (same exact radio)

they but had similar output numbers but the TRC-449 was said to sound great... while the TRC-458 was said to sound compressed, tinny, and tight ESP on side band...

I used the same antenna and mic on both units...

I tried AC and DC power on the 458

I went through and adjusted the 458 the same way I did the 449...

but the results are just not there...

I am starting to think I might need to consider a recap

other ideas?

If I was going to make ths radio my main radio, I would ship it off along with a D-104 or Turner+3 to DTB Radio and let him do his thing to it.

Then you know it will be a keeper.

I have thought about this actually... but I am sure having some fun doing it myself

I got it in and it just blew fuses on the SSB side any time you keyed, and it would just click the relay anytime you keyed on AM

I talked to the guy I got it running, removed a bad cap and dialed in the frequency.... now she is a real talker... swing well over 20 watts, solid copy out there in California on 38L, mr 4040 has me on the video gate

talked to the seller about it, he offered me $20 since it was not running as well as it should have, so basically this radio cost:
