Trying to reprogram the EPROM on a Midland 70-336B radio

I picked up a pair of Midland 70-336B radios at a ham fest for $5 a pop. These were set up to operate in the 150-174 VHF band. I want to convert them to be ran on the 144-148 2 meter band. Of course I don't know if they have the tone board in them but I could at least get them to work on simplex.

Anyways, my CB guy has the Midland 70-1000 reprogrammer that reprograms the EPROMs for the frequencies you desire. There's one problem....apparently so I understand, you must "erase" the EPROM first before you can reprogram it.

I don't have the eraser, but I believe I read the eraser just shines a UV light at the EPROM to erase it....?

Could I get by with setting the EPROM in the direct sunlight? Or do I need to pony up the $ and buy the eraser?

Anyone have any tips for getting these set up for 2 M ham use?

Thanks in advance.

Yes EPROMs need to be erased before they can be reprogrammed

I have an eraser, but I am in the UK do you know what model the EPROM is perhaps I could wipe one and send it to you

FWIW sunlight will not erase the EPROM unless you have a LOT of time to wait like days or even weeks depending on the UV radiation. It requires direct and intense ultra-violet light. Pick up an old black light or even just the bulb from any hardware store. A black light is an ultra-violet light. It should do the job fairly quickly I would think.

I do new car ecm programming and re-program e-proms for older fuel injected cars, the uv eraser works in just a couple minutes, as posted sunlight wont do it. find someone in your area that does custom car ecm tuning and they will probly have a uv-eraser

This is just in case anyone reviews this thread for info, I realize it is years old

The programmer for the 70-336B is a Midland 70-1000, there is also a skyline model 70-1000x on the web, the eprom is a Z383 those radios are 8 channel radios

you can also modify them with a chip socket then program them with a regular eprom programmer

I would join the Midland yahoo group and look in the files section of the group as well as ask members for info on these old radios

they are good commercial rigs which work well for 2 meters

peace,
