So if i have a 10m antenna and try to tune 20m what will happen? Would it be wise to buy a LDG external tuner?
It would be far wiser to buy a 20m antenna. Or build a 20m antenna. Or steal a 20m antenna. Get the idea?
How about a multiband, trapped vertical outside? That's probably the easiest solution (if possible). Or a 'fan' dipole, it doesn't get much simpler than that. Naturally, it'd take more room. Or a trapped and loaded dipole? Or a doublet as long as possible and fed with ladder line through a balun? That one is probably the simplest as far as the antenna goes. Still too many variables to say for sure if the '480's tuner would handle it. But, it shouldn't be difficult to 'mess' with various lengths to make it work.

That is by far my choice for a decent simple multiband antenna. I ran one for a couple years after my tribander was destroyed by successive storms. I just took it down a couple weeks ago while preparing to remove the tower it was hanging from. The only thing is that it does have some awful impedances to deal with and I am certain no built-in tuner will handle them. You will need a good external tuner. My choice is and has always been a good manual tuner over any of the auto-tuners. Ten seconds tops to tune the antenna, half that if I make up a tuning chart, will not shorten my life.
C.K.
I agree, a manual tuner just isn't that much of a problem at all. The more 'prep' work you do before hand, finding the settings for things, the quicker/easier they are to use. I think I've probably used just about all the more common ones over the years. I've pretty much found my 'perfect' manual tuner. Not much that it can't get at least 'close' to right. Not that it's 'perfect', but it's done what Ive asked of it. (No, I ain't saying what it is! Might break it and need another one. Done that once already. It hasn't been produced in years and finding parts is the pits.)
I think I've had a built-in tuner in every HF radio I've had in the last while. They come in handy for a lot of things. They aren't substitutes for doing things right, but they certainly take care of 'little' things I may remember too late...
