excuse me for this question.
i was told a hf radio on ssb rx, and cb radio next on ssb rx. tune cb radio until harmonic sounds even out ( like tuning gutare, or mandolin) ?

Your hf radio will be off center as much as the (cb) is due to inferior filters used in (cb) radios.

(CB) filters run from 6 to 8 hz wide and using the cb will give you the same results so I would use another hf rig with known vfo frequency centering which should be 2 hz or less.

cb=AM

The filter is not inferior in the CB it is designed to meet the FCC's regulations! Their is no mandate that Citizen Band on SSB must use 3mhz band width filter. Inferior implies that they are require to meet a standard that is different from what they currently meet and that is not the case. CB's as they leave the factory that are type accepted by the FCC meet all reguirments set forth by the FCC!

i think Mack meant cb filters were generally inferior to hf set filters (albeit more so in the case of the narrow optional filters for hf sets), not just generally inferior.

do you not mean 3Khz wide? a 3Mhz wide filter would let Pavarotti slip through.

Mack do you not mean 2-8 Khz wide? The invisible man would struggle to get through a 2-8 hz wide filter.

I'm not familiar with tuning any kind of stringed instrument so have no idea what was said about that. I am familiar with filters for radios though.
The primary difference between CB filters and ham filters is in what mode they are designed to accommodate and there are large degrees of difference there. Using just one filter for two modes of different bandwidth is possible, but there are consequences. If a wider filter than usual is used, then more signal is going to be heard, probably not what was wanted. That sort of defeats the purpose of narrower filters that are normal for SSB use, right? It isn't the filter's fault, but the cheap 'axed' manufacturer of that radio and the buyer who doesn't refuse to do things like that. Using more than one filter typically means a redesign of the radio, which isn't going to be real popular with manufacturers (whens the last time you saw a really significant redesign of any CB radio??). So, while there can certainly be degradation in performance, the fault doesn't rest with the filter.
There are various aspects of filters that can be manipulated to make them of higher 'quality' than others. And there are consequences with that too! The one that usually filters down to the user/buyer is cost. And that particular aspect sometimes isn't very small at all.

Yes that was a typo thanks for the correction.....I do not know if Pavarti could fit he is kind of big even for a tenor!!! HE is a tenor right? LOL I could fit through and I built like a Defensive Lineman!!!LOL

ssb radios are very much like a guitar but not as stable, you can tune or zerobeat the frequency of a ssb cb to the frequency of a hf set using the same technique you listen for when tuning a guitar to a pitch pipe or your buddies guitars to put you in concert pitch for a jam,
key the cb mic and hold it near the hf sets speaker then tune like you tune your guitar, just like a guitar if your buddies are off or drop tuned youres will be too, they will sound good playing together so long as nobody else joins in with their wha wha:wink:

:lol: correct, it's somewhere between Pavarotti and the invisible guy so forgive my mistake.:thumbup:
