Tuning Pulser Question

Christmas Greetings and New Year's Salutations.

I just acquired an Ameritron ATP-102 Tuning pulser. I haven't used it yet. I still need to make up a cable for it. However, looking at the instructions it indicates that tuning is done in CW mode. If I intend to TX in SSB will I still need to tweek things for Max output or should it be pretty much dead on when I switch modes to begin using SSB after haveing used CW for tune up? :?

thanks :!:

Follow the instructions - they're right on the money. You can't tune a transmitter using SSB - there's no carrier. When you're done tuning and switch to SSB, the carrier and one sideband are gone, but the remaining sideband is still where it was with respect to the carrier so yes, you'll be right on frequency.

Thanks Beetle,
You indicate tuning a transmitter, but I'm not tuning a transmitter. The tuning pulser is used in loading and tuning an RF amplifier, in this case an AL-80A. Most tune an amp by modulating "AudiOOOO" or as in QRMexico "HooooLA" :P .So is the answer the same? :?

Amplifier --- transmitter --- in this case, the two are interchangeable. There's still no carrier on SSB. Tune using CW. Your pulser won't work in any mode but CW, I believe.

And QRN is right - sending a string of QRQ dits will do exactly the same thing as your pulser.

Leave it to me to find the cheap way of doing something just as well as the expensive way. :) I absolutley refuse to give money to a company when I can do or build it myself.Don't even get me started on the computer/radio interfaces for digital comms. Two 1/8 inch plugs and some wire works as well as those expen$ive Rigblaster units.

I have one of those...works great.

If I set my keyer to about 60-70 wpm and send a series of dots will it accomplish the same thing?

Yes (as Beetle said), but the nice thing about the Ameritron is that the tone warbles and it also pulses to create a very low duty cycle. The series of dots will work, but probably won't be quite as low of a duty cycle depending on how fast you send them.

Yeah I don't need to worry anyway.Tuning up a tube amp or rig is no big deal once you have done it a few thousand times anyway. Besides, half the fun of tuning up a high power tube rig is waiting for the tune/load caps to arc before the tubes do.
