I think it was like $98 a few months ago when I got mine from Amazon. Can't beat the value. No need to even look at the Cobra 29 anymore.
Was $100, then $120 again. Back down to $113. Decent quality for the price I like mine with an Astatic D104M6B, and palomar 450ld.

I realize tech changes, etc, make it a relativistic statement . . . still, for setting up a friend or relative, it’s sorta incredible. The $$ can go to the antenna & accessories.
Does every family car have an AM/SSB radio? Every home?
Installed or not, package this up:
—,APACHE 3800 transport case
— Capped PVC, etc, to hold an antenna.
— Plenty of room in that case for your (ahem) mandatory 18’ of coax.
Be a big spender and add:
— WEST MOUNTAIN RADIO CLEARSPEAKER for DSP filtration.
Might want to go up a case size, so throw in:
— RM ITALY KL-203 while you’re at it. An Amphenol connector or two.
Plus:
1). High grade jumpers.
2). UV & Flame resistant split loom casing.
3). SAE or USCG 105C Power Cabling plus fuze & connectors.
Split up the above between anniversaries, graduations, birthdays and Christmas. (You know, those royalty checks that come every quarter; what to do with all that xtra cash, ha!)
A pick/pluck foam transport case to hold it all but the antenna.
The real gift would be your installation.
Whether they “want” it or not.
FWIW, that’s what a fine bargain I think this radio represents.

C). Properly-installed Ground Rods?
D). All Hazards Radio?

Throw in a 120V power supply. Sits in a cabinet until common sense kicks in (antenna mount and coax already run & tested).

The one I bought in September is one of the radios I’ll be leaving the house with tomorrow. The 885 is going in . . . and a Lincoln is on the list.
I’ll buy at least two more UNIDEN 980s and the three will be ever-present adjusted/tested backups waiting in transport cases with a complete set of gear included. Big truck, pickup, and at home.

Every one (I’m included) makes fun of Truckers. Those who are Americans — I can promise you — will brave Hell’s minions to answer a woman’s cries for help across the radio. Some will be on the phone, some others will block traffic, and the genuine nuts will push thru jersey barriers.
Your natural allies need a heads-up.

I’ve seen some fine firearms on this site. Were they mine they’d already be in mind as the gift I’d like to give those who helped when I couldn’t.
If it isn’t evident, the UNIDEN 980 is my idea of the dead-simple, cast-iron reliable stainless revolver in the tackle box. The one in your sainted mother’s sewing table. Your boys car glovebox.
Let’s leave that particular tool till last. A deep sigh of finality isn’t what some are ever prepared for.

You can get a pair of 203s for a little over $100. This is where I got mine. Run one to each antenna on your mirrors? Haha

I plan to buy the 203s as above.
Won’t take long that third or fourth “hey, relative, you’re receiving THIS gift”, set of radio gear is at next to no cost.
