Uniden 980

Not that I know of. Lescomn burnt a radio or 2 up trying, but I'm not sure he was ever got one to work properly. Haven't seen or heard anything about it. I did hear about him trying like Robb has stated but not sure if he succeeded.

NO CHANNEL MODS POSSIBLE UNLESS YOU CAN WRITE A PROGRAM OR PATCH THE EXISTING CODE TO ADD THEM ... ITS ALL SOFTWARE CONTROLLED...SO I AM TOLD... XXX

Yep, change out the 10.2417 crystal to get extras. That's what I did on my 980 and it worked fine. I can't remember the exact frequency you need, as the radio went south on me and I threw it away.

~Cheers~

When you say went south Exit13, what exactly happened? And was this because of the channel mod or something else? I know the final is a POS, but I think that can be resolved with some de tuning of the radio and bias voltage settings. Yes/NO?? Just curious as what happened to the radio. I bought mine not too long after they came out. Found one on sale at a Pilot or Flying J while traveling. Don't even remember what state it was LOL! Anyways I have had it for at least 3 years now and have not had any issues with it. I don't use it much but I do get on it sometimes and use it when I do. Never gets hot, warm yes, but not hot. Thanks for any responses about your old 980. Hope all is well man! Have a good one and don't work too hard:D(y)(y).
73 and God Bless
Sean

Try using a VFO in place of a crystal.
FYI ONLY .. I JUST PICKED UP A 980 FROM HOME DEPOT ONLINE FOR $108.00 ... NOT A REFURB, NOT A RETURN, IT IS NOS .. I HAVE HEARD GOOD REVIEWS AND ALL THE POSITIVE STUFF RINGS TRUE .. HOOKED UP TO MY PALOMAR AND IT CUTS THROUGH THE CRAP... XXX

They are good radios for the money. Just some things that need to be done IMO if you are going to use it for extended periods of time. Cooling and setting things correctly being a couple of them. They aren't power house radios but have clean, clear audio and are on frequency out of the box as far as transmit goes. Clarifier is locked on RX only. But none the less that isn't a bad thing as long as the radio is on frequency and stays that way. And they do. They are pretty solid on SSB and don't drift like some radios!!! Anyhow, like I have said many times as well as many many others is the crappy final used in it. Gotta cut some costs somewhere to keep the cost of the radio at the price point it's at!! JMHO.

Really like my 980, I got mine 3-4 years ago for under a $100 at a flying j. Nothing but good reports with it using the stock microphone. I have a RM Italy 203 hooked to it. So far no problem with the final. My only complaint is no mods for extra channels. I really hope someone figures it out for this radio.

Mine sounded great for six months and then blew the final. It was spot on frequency and had great audio with an Astatic 636 and the on board mic gain at 3/4. Not sure exactly what is happened, but I suspect a voltage regulator failed and the high voltage taking out the final.
