North coast of the USA.... Da UP!
I am curious about the output stage of the 980 as the internal view from the FCC page shows it to have a driver and a single final....
Seems this would be a MOSFET output stage as there seems to be two reasonings against the output being only four watts output. First since conventional transistors are scarce that would exclude them from being used in this rig. Second MOSFETs are more common place and set up can be realized with four watts on AM and PEP of 12 watts on SSB.

P.S. If you look closely there seems to be an indentation for a second final! Perhaps a look into the future of this chassis or it's sisters! ;)

This is the way I see it. It's just silly that people put a well made CB radio (not a high end amateur radio) in the "Dog class" just because they can't be modified into something else. Those same people go right out and buy a Galaxy or clone POS and think it's a greeat radio because you can turn up all the VR's with a screwdriver!! If you need more channels power get a ham ticket or buy an amp. Stop the idiocy.

I would buy a 980 for my truck and run it along side a good mobile HF rig.

Good point - we probably shouldn't be expecting this radio to be any sort of audio monster. The new Stryker 955 is loud on SSB, this Uniden probably won't be. But, when paired with a good power mike it probably will sound nice on the air, just not overpowering.

It probably isn't going to be a huge swinging radio either, of course we can't tell anything until we actually see one.

I'm sure a lot of people will complain this isn't like the older style radios that were easy to mod for extra channels, crank up pots, etc. I'm sure it will perform well and hopefully be nice and stable, but I'm just not expecting it to be a screamer, of course it could always surprise.

Exactly.
I am not going to modify it for 10m or below no point as I have hf radios for that purpose. I want a awesome updated cb rig with ssb. And I think the uniden will do just that.

Fuck extra class cbers

I talked with a distributor this morning and they all have their orders in and are waiting for them to show up. Should be anytime now.

Got it in yesterday and installed it. The options are gonna take getting used to as well as that beep. With the mic gain all the way up it DKs about 3.5w and carries about 7.5w. The RF Gain is lacking IMO. The ssb is not great either. I could do better chasing my Galaxy. The freq. readout needs another decimal. I'll need to tweak the output for a decent ratio. It picks up more engine noise than the other radio I had in this truck.

Give it time. It is different.
