Uniden repair thoughts

My first radio was a Uniden PC76 and it died. I replaced it with a Galaxy 929 but held on the it. Then used it for parts. I decided to put it together again.

I replaced the final transistor (which tested to be faulty) But when I powered the radio on it still had no TX. The TX light turns red and the speaker clicks and the static stops. But the internal meter shows no movement. I also had an external meter inline that read conclusively to the radio's internal meter, which was no output.

I ordered a new driving transistor, but the old one didn't test faulty. I am going to install it anyway and see what happens. But any ideas where to look next. I am new to repairing radios and don't really know a lot.

First off anything old school Uniden made is worth fixing.

Next up, there is a reason places like DTB radio, Bob's cb, and Custom cb radio are 3-10 weeks behind on repair work. They are smart dudes, they do it right, and they have ALL the proper gear to get the job done.

A good shop will have 5-10 grand in repair equipment. Unless you have that sitting around send it in. You will be very happy in the end.

I am trying to learn more about the operation of radio equipment. If I end up over my head, then I will send it out. But as I am a disable vet, working part time as a carpenter is killing me. I want to use my GI bill to get my degree in electrical engineering and focus on tranceiver radios and open my own shop. I am a long way off, but I want to build a good base of knowledge before I start. Sending the radio out won't teach me anything. I probably will end up at DTB or Bells, but i want to have a crack at it first.

Just my two cents worth here Roadrage. I am in the same boat as you when it comes to repairing radios. Still learning and don't have alot of equipment. I wont even dream of poking around in one of my 2510's, but I do play with yard sale finds and dumpster radios. Just for the experience.

I currently have the following non working radios I have picked up at yard sales and swap meets that I will not mess with until I feel 100% confident in my skills and have the right equipment.

2 philly made 148's
A president grant
And a Galaxy DX55

I have a stack of Sound Tracker Cobra 29's that I have played with, some of them to moderate success, some to good success, most of them to a scratch the head and stare at a circuit board failure. But each failure is a lesson learned.

I have never paid more than 5 dollars for a non working radio to play with. The Sound Tracker Cobras I get from work. They toss them out if the mic quits and buy a new radio for the truck.

I would add that uniden to the list that I won't mess with.
