I bought one of these used and find the roller inductor seems to stop in each direction too quickly without affecting the needles on the meter at all.
Can the contact roller jump off the end of the inductor?
No fun so far...

Homer: There is a couple of "Tension Springs" one each end of the roller on some models
However, there are a couple of different versions that have been built.
(Original Vectronics/Canada...Then after MFJ bought them out / Mississippi)
You're going to have to open it up and look it over.
It could be something as simple as a loose drive coupling, and the front panel indicator has lost the calibration.
All the Best

The contact roller had run off the end of the inductor.
There is the wire jumper on the front of the inductor and a second one on the back. Only the front one is connected at both ends. The back one is not. I see they are redundant, but I will attach it ...

Haven't had enough time to give the tuner a workout...
I have an 8010 efhw that is resonant on the harmonics, but not better than a 3.1:1 match on the best of them except 3.5 Mhz, so I figured to see what it could do. I managed to get it to tune on 75m, 40m, and 20m, but not any of the higher bands. . . Might try it on a non resonant length of wire when I can.
