I am looking for a video camera for videotaping my Jeepin stuff and I also run a youth football program and want to use it to video tape games and make a video montage with added music and still pictures.

I only have $1000.00 to spend on it.

I am using a PC, I know I know a Mac would be better but I don’t have one.

Can someone recommend a video camera and software for making a kewl video within that budget?

I can tell you that Adobe Premier Elements is the best video editing software there is. Go to the adobeforums.com for that sw and see which camera is suggested today. I think one of the panasonic DV was a good one. one kilobuck oughtta do it.

there are so many different camcorders out there
many will do a great job

do you perfer DV
DVD-R
hard drive
high definition

stay with sony,panasonc,canon,jvc

do you want/need a long zoom
do you want it to also be capable of digital pictures

for means of hooking to computer
you need it to have firewire-1394-IEEE cable
you can also use USB 2.0 (not original usb 1.1)

in nearly 30 years in industry
many find it really hard to buy a simple camcorder
(as well as other home electronics)

My thoughts were to buy a Sony HandyCam with a hard drive.

This way I am not limited to only what I can do on a mini dvd or a tape.

I just wanted to know if the video quality is good?

* 10x optical/80x digital zoom
never use the digital zoom
digital zoom only screws up picture quality BIG time

* 2.7" color widescreen Clear Photo plus touch-panel LCD monitor with rotates up to 270° for multiple viewing angles
good size screan but no biggie there

* 1/3" ClearVID CMOS image sensor with , 1430K (16:9) and 1080K (4:3) effective
the 1/3 cmos chip is much better then the 1/4 inch
1/4 inch may have better low light abilities
but i perfer 1/3 to 1/2 inch for better clarity/higher resolution

2.1 total megapixels is no big deal
if i need pics is better to use digital camera with far higher performance

16x9 is likly the perfered format
especially given all tv's are heading to 16x9 (most/many are now anyways)

sony always has great color compared to other brands
(only canon equals or betters color quality)

Look for a used Sony DCR-TRV950. I bought a couple of them when they were $1600 ea. The biggest reason to buy it is because it's a 3CCD unit (most are 1CCD), so you get a much better picture and nice saturated colors. Other reasons: While it records in stereo, it has some nice accessories (shotgun microphone, wide-stereo microphone) which are camera specific and connect via the hotflash shoe. Of course, it also has the usual jacks for any 3rd party microphone. There are a ton of other features (you can d/l the manual from Sony), but when I went from my previous 1CCD camcorder to this 3CCD, the difference was like night/day.
