I went out and bought Vista Ultimate to replace my laptops Vista business.
i turned off the laptop popped in the CD and booted to the CD it went through a few things and got to the screen where it says: Upgrade or the other selection was wipe the drive and a fresh install. Since i didn't want to wipe the drive It wouldn't let me choose upgrade, so i exited the program and i restarted the laptop. Now it says: Operating System not Found.

Impossible because when i go into DOS cmd all my files are there. the drive is now labeled X. what do i need to do to change the boot.ini file back to normal?

Step by step process please...

Can you rename the X drive back to C drive? Not 100% sure but I believe the system looks for the OS in the C drive and since you now no longer have a C drive it cannot find it. rename the drive to C and try again.

I found it labeled X by clicking on system recovery options on the CD it ask to load drivers but no disk and system32/diskpart is not there...not sure id thats what I need but somewhere on the C OR X DRIVE my drivers are there. This sucks I didn't delete anything I guess microsoft does this on purpose.

god must be having massive brain failure.

ran this on cmd

bootrec.exe /fixmbr
bootrec.exe /fixboot

fixed my problem.

i think its time to get a refresher on dos commands :embarrassed:

Why didn't you just go with Win 7? I upgraded from Vista Home Premium a few months ago and 7 is a far better system for me.

Agreed, I updated from XP to Windows Ultimate 7 and it put all my XP stuff in a folder named
Windows.old so I didn't lose a thing. Has anyone here tried or knows someone who tried Windows 8 beta yet?

I am not a fan of 7 ezcept for the fancy GUI.

There is still bugs to work out in 7 ( security flaws).

I may try it on the vaio laptop today, now that I just backed up 1tb of data.
