After much research, I went with a Comet 712-EFC. I've compared it to a few different antennas - including a 3db gain Sinclair, a 7.2 db gain Retevis MA 09 and a few others. The Comet delivers a lot of bang for very reasonable bucks. Our local amateur radio club was impressed enough that it decided to use it for the club's GMRS local repeaters, too.

Comet makes very good antennas but as with all Japanese mfg's the gain figures are inflated.

Similarly, most of us realize that an A99 really doesn't have 9.9 db (or even dbi) gain. That said, the Comet 712-EFC has outperformed every other GMRS omni antenna I've tried in real world conditions.
