I do not think he is co-phasing, it looks like he is feeding them as a single antenna, the whole bar is hot.
Look at the insulated mounting on the tool box.

I have seen a couple of set-ups like that(not the rubber band stuff) were the idea was group two (or more) antennas in very close spacing, all hot.
I do not think the goal was directivity, but they were thinking along the lines of something else...freecell might remember some of this,there was a 4 (5?)francis mount that feed them as one antenna.
I do not know how effective it was, but hey, I have used some weird stuff for antennas to see how it works

The only affect of bunching a common fed setup like that for me is to maybe broaden the bandwidth some and I think it is just as Jeff states. But I don't know why this penchant for broadbandedness either since the same bunch that calls for this also hollers maximum gain and power and match and every thing else all in the same breath. It's like it all comes together over there on their funny little setups that are different from everyone else.

It is mostly just about being different, and making the other guy wonder, what the heck am I missing out on now.

I can't see any reason for the bungee cords-- they would'nt do a darn thing-- maybey just a convient place to keep them-- regarless those antennas would put alot of stress on that mount, I don't think the bungees would help too much-- maybey a bit-- but he has the wrong mount for those long suckers
I don't know what to think of these "2 antennas on a hotbar" setup-- more metal in the air so more bandwidth maybey-- possibly a bit better rx
Sure would like to know whatthe advantage is to running 2 on a hotbar -- like in gain or RX

I'd like to see the stress put on those mounts when that guy is going down the highway LOL

It "LOOKS" neat and that's all I can give it. Obiously, the whole setup is idiotic. No possible good ground and the thing doesn't look like it radiates to anything but the truck. Antennas are too close together to do any good even if they actually are getting RF from the coax. Dumb. Very dumb.

Sometimes it's cool to be different and try new things fact is I have not done it or seen it done so I say why not it's worth a try just for the reaction factor. Just my 2 cents.

Seriously, regardless of our 'facts' about what we know 'works', unless you were to do meaningful measurments on an antenna range, you won't know if it works or not. Most real advancements in antenna designs have come from figuring out why something works, rather than making stuff from what we already know works. Even with today's computer modeling software, you still have to plug in the parameters and then it will only give you the facts, as we know them. Give the guy a break. If it works, it works. Figure out why. If it doesn't, try something else. Using what we know works, is the 'safe' way. Trying out something new to see if it will work and if it does, why; is what makes this a fun hobby. YMMV
