All I have owned before was CB radios. My last one had SSB. Now I ordered a stryker 955hp peaked and tuned, but it just occurred to me that it has way more bandwidth than what my normal (firestick 4ft) antenna was meant for. A couple of noob questions:

1) what is the best kind of antenna for this radio (is there any one and/or best solution)?
2) if I keep this radio and tune the swr as best as I can, is there any chance I could damage my radio by broadcasting (yes I'm going to get a technician's license as soon as I can)?
3)if I kept that antenna, will I even be able to receive in the lower and higher frequencies?

Thanks in advance.

I bet a 102" will have enough bandwidth to cover all or most of the frequencies on the 955.

My answers below in bold.

1) what is the best kind of antenna for this radio (is there any one and/or best solution)? A 102 whip from Radio shack, if you can get one. p/n 21-903. Don't forget the 6 inch barrel spring that makes up the last 6 inches of the antenna. Also a 108 whip from MFJ is good and doesn't need the barrel spring.
2) if I keep this radio and tune the swr as best as I can, is there any chance I could damage my radio by broadcasting (yes I'm going to get a technician's license as soon as I can)? If what you mean is you plan to run this on 10 meters in addition to 11 meters....as long as you use a broad banded antenna such as a 102 whip, you should be ok. Best thing to do is tune 102 so it has a low SWR from 26.965 to 28.500. Also be advised while this radio will work on 10 meters, you may find it is a bit cumbersome as it doesn't have a full VFO.
3)if I kept that antenna, will I even be able to receive in the lower and higher frequencies? Yes you can receive.

Thanks in advance.

thanks for your replys

I didn't expect such prompt and direct answers. Thank you all for taking the time and being helpful.

I'd second (or third, fourth...) the 102", but if you don't have room, you could run a base loaded antenna and have a spare whip in the trunk. one for 10 meter and one for 11.

If you can't mount the 102" whip then the sirio performer 5000 is the next best thing. Just make sure you you use the spring. which would give you around 106"...

Now the sirio on the other hand is 108" long electrically. If you could hard mount it in the center of the roof it would be very hard to beat.

Why do you guys like/recommend the Sirio rather than a 10-K?

From my perspective, it's more about aesthetics than performance differences between those two. I have a 10-K, and it works GREAT. Covers 10-11 meters very well, and I've talked all over the US and into Europe with it. The Sirio looks a little more sophisticated to me, and a whole lot less "Bubba". I still need to buy a Sirio, and I've only been mulling it over for about a year.

I have a 955, and I use a Predator 10K dual coil SW (short whip). It works real good on 10-and 11m. Very broad banded. I live around a buch of trees , and I still hit the whip. I've even ran into a basketball hoop, and the only damage was to the mount, and not the antenna. The aircraft aluminum it's made of is very strong.

I know of several people who have used the sirio performer PL5000, and the whip breaks, bends real easy. I don't know, but that's what I've heard. 1OK parts are also easily obtained if you ever need any. American made in Texas.

Mine is mounted on a pickup's headache rack, so it looks fine. Probably wouldn't be something you'd want on a car. If you decide on one, I do have a word of caution for you. They attract attention like you wouldn't believe. Radio people and non radio people alike are always asking me about my antenna. Drives the YL crazy when we go shopping , and someone asks about it.

It's the only antenna I will own. I also run a antenna de-icer and it can handle all the power you will ever need.
