sounds to me they were just experimenting and having fun , maybe even if they didn't know what they were doing ? People believe and do the strangest things. Weather or not it's scientifically sound or not. I've known to many people over the years (including myself) once upon a time a go , that they just had to have that limiter clipped. Have fun.
