What Think About Water Wars?

I'm sure this is goin' on elsewhere too but here in the Dixie there is an ongoing battle between AL, Fla & Ga regarding downstream flows coming out of water originating in Ga.

Here's the deal. Water comes out of the ground in Ga. It gets used by Georgians and there are "leftovers" which flows out of the state via rivers.

I think if water originates within a state then that state should get 1st use of all of it. If there is any leftover which can flow to another place then fine and dandy. The other place should consider that a bonus and be thankful.

Instead the other places are demanding guaranteed portions of this natural resource which came out of the ground elsewhere.

What the hell??

Why is this any different than any other mineral originating in the ground elsewhere.? Say I'm in North Carolina and you're in South Carolina. You have gold in your backyard. I stand up and say...."hey neighbor, give me 20% of your gold....dammit!"

??

In this capitalist-materialistic society, everything else seems to be finder's keeper's or I have this and I'm happy to sell it to you for $XXX.

Why should this situation be any different?

Al and FLA just want to grab something that originates/belongs to someone else.

But but but....ya gotta have water to live !

So what? Ya gotta have food too. You don't see Florida demanding that Kansas give them tons of wheat so they can make bread do you?

Damn monkeys!

Somewhere, somehow, I'm sure monkeys are to blame for this mess.

The problem is that the water was provided by nature, thus no one entity owns it, and was available before. It's called precedence just like any other preexisting item that someone wants to claim as their own. Mineral rights is completely different. The minerals did not exist or belong to any one else other than where they were found. I do however like your idea about keeping it where it originates. Canada could bring the western and southwestern USA to it's knees if we kept all OUR water. :D

Hey C.K.!
There's some of your water down here, the white and clear solid kind. Come and get it and take it home!

No thanks Doc. I just had about 15 inches of fresh stuff delivered last night. :censored: We just finished getting the yard cleared out.

Come to think about it, according to the weather forecast we got YOUR leftovers so I am sending you a package. You can have YOUR water back.(y)

Doesn't anyone own a map in Florida, there is water to the east, west and south:headbang

And tell those people in New Orleans that all the farmers in the upper Midwest want all their topsoil shipped back for free as it was taken without permission:censored: Please have equal amounts shipped to MN, WI, ND, SD, IA, OH and IL

Several years back Kansas sued Colorado when it did not deliver it's projected acre feet of water for several years due to low snow fall in the mountains and won.

Lesson learned, don't count your chickens before they hatch.
