This is going to be my first CB and I want to use it in my home and truck. I am not new to useing a radio but never had a CB of my own. What I have ben looking at is a unit that I can use in home and when I need to put it in my pick up. I have looked at the new Cobra 148 ssb for a starter with a power converter. As far as a base antenna or what one to use I will need your advice. I live in a mostly farm land area with some hills and not one building over barn high. If y'all have a better radio for a starter I am open to any help with this. I am kind of stuck on one with a ssb. It will give me more options.
Thanks.

Radio with SSB....148 GTL is a very good 1st time radio, power wise it will do around 25 pep watts. There are better radios out there but they are higher. A 2950 Ranger is one of the best side band radios they make but they go for around $300.00 or so and they can be a little complicated to operate.
Antenna.....Imax 2000. Some where around $75.00 at the most.
Get how ever much coax you need so that you can put the antenna up around 36 feet,on top of the barn would do great. As far a power supply goes i would get something around 20 amps. You will not need something that big for the ranger but in time you may want to run a bigger radio (higher power) so you may as well get one of the larger supplys now,but its your money if you want you can get by with a 3 amp supply. With this relative inexpensive setup you should get out just fine at home or in the truck.

...........You do have a good antenna on your truck don't you?

the 148 is a good choice.
for antenna: Imax as mentioned is good, Antron 99 can be had for less money, but may bleed on neighbors. There are also better and more expensive options.

How much do you have to spend?

as far as the truck: maybe go with a wilson 1000 mag or roof mount. if too big.... a little wil' magnetic is good for truck to truck.

For $40.00 you can buy a refurbished Uniden 510xl and for another 10 or so you can buy a 520xl. These are great little AM only (no SSB) radios. It may be worth the money so you dont have to switch and they are small and can mount in alot more places than a full size chassis.

Just something else to think about.

good luck
