What type of mic elements did the older Realistic radios use?

I'm wanting to find a mic for my Navajo I have for sale. So far I've tried 2 mics, both dynamics, both Radio Shacks....neither shows any modulation when keyed.

Anyone know if perhaps the older Realistics were condenser mics.....?

The older Realistic mics ran a dynamic element that's about 600 ohms, roughly. If you put 2 mics on the radio and it doesn't modulate, could either be a problem with the radio itself (since you didn't mention if the radio modulates properly or not) or you got unlucky with 2 mics. The condenser element mics won't work on the older Navaho chassis. If you have a multimeter check for about 500-600 ohms across the mic element. If that's not present, the element is bad. Good luck!

I know the radio works. Before I sold my TRC-448, I used the mic (21-1172) from it, and it worked.

Then I bought a used 21-1172 and it didn't work, then tried a 21-1177 and it too didn't work. Both mics still had their factory 5 pin plugs on them.

On my base I use a non amplified D-104 lollypop and it is the best sounding mic around. They are hard to find and that is what I recommend.
DO NOT get an Astatic Buckeye non amplified handheld, they suck.

While the dynamic mic was Radio Shacks most popular some of the older 23 channel radios used a ceramic hi impedance element. The mic looked the same, just the element was different. When the radios went from tubes to transistors, they still ran the mic inputs as hi impedance for a few years before the designs changed to low impedance. The reality is your dynamic mic should have produced some audio if it were wired right and the radio was working. The audio would be low but detectable.

I took a multimemter and in the 20k ohm position, checked for ohms from the black coming off the mic element that ties to the shield wire, and the red that comes off the element and is soldered onto the switch. My meter didn't even register. I will presume i should have gotten something?

FWIW when you key up, the modulation light does light up a little bit but not much - it's supposed to get brighter as your voice goes but it doesn't. My radio was built I believe either 1975 or 1976.

Realistic Mic's

If you want to easily check a mic, plug a known good external speaker into the PA jack on a known good radio and speak thru the PA system, easy check mic good or bad...............
