Something very strange is happening to Earth's magnetic North Pole, and no one knows why
Scientists are baffled as to why the Earth's magnetic North Pole is shifting away from its current position at a much faster rate than expected. The world's geomagnetism experts have been forced into a rare move and are in the process of updating the World Magnetic Model two years earlier than originally planned. According to experts, the magnetic North Pole is shifting away from Canada, towards Siberia.

Planet Earth is alive. Deep beneath its skin, its life blood — rivers of molten iron — pulse around its core. And this mobile iron is what generates the magnetic field that causes auroras — and keeps us alive.

But, according to the science journal Nature, something strange is going on deep down below.

It’s causing the magnetic North Pole to ‘skitter’ away from Canada, towards Siberia.

“The magnetic pole is moving so quickly that it has forced the world’s geomagnetism experts into a rare move,” Nature reports.

On January 30 (delayed due to the US Government shutdown), the World Magnetic Model — which governs modern navigation systems — is due to undergo an urgent update.

This model is a vital component of systems ranging from geopositioning systems used to navigate ships through to smartphone trackers and maps.

The current model was expected to be valid until 2020. But the magnetic pole began to shift so quickly, it was realized in 2018 that the model had to be fixed — now.

“They realized that it was so inaccurate that it was about to exceed the acceptable (safe) limit for navigational errors,” Nature reports.

Every year, geophysicists from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the British Geological Survey do a check on how the Earth’s magnetic field is varying.

This is necessary as the liquid iron churning in the Earth’s core does not move in a consistent manner.

“In 2016, for instance, part of the magnetic field temporarily accelerated deep under northern South America and the eastern Pacific Ocean,” Nature reports.

This shift was captured by satellites.

But the movement of the north magnetic pole has been the object of study since 1831. Initially, it was tracked moving into the Arctic Ocean at a rate of about 15km each year. But, since the mid 1990s, it has picked up speed.

It’s now shifting at a rate of about 55km a year.

But another recent study has revealed the Earth’s magnetic field has been acting up now for some 1,000 years.


Why the magnetic field is shifting so dramatically is unknown.

“Geomagnetic pulses, like the one that happened in 2016, might be traced back to ‘hydromagnetic’ waves arising from deep in the core,” Nature reports. “And the fast motion of the north magnetic pole could be linked to a high-speed jet of liquid iron beneath Canada”.

This fast-flowing molten river appears to be weakening the magnetic influence of the iron core beneath North America.

“The location of the north magnetic pole appears to be governed by two large-scale patches of magnetic field, one beneath Canada and one beneath Siberia,” Phil Livermore of the University of Leeds told an American Geophysical Union meeting. “The Siberian patch is winning the competition.”

And, as global warming opens up more shipping lanes to the north of Russia and Canada, this presents a potentially deadly problem.

“The fact that the pole is going fast makes this region more prone to large errors,” says Arnaud Chulliat, a geomagnetist at the University of Colorado Boulder and NOAA.

Not only are both the geomagnet's poles moving, they have accelerated their motion the last ten or so years. One visible side effect is the markings at the end of airport runways. They get repainted with a new magnetic-compass heading when it drifts, and the old heading is no longer valid.

Some think the real news is the weakening of the earth's geomagnetic field.

I read that article today, pretty interesting stuff. I think just like everything else the media throws out it's either exaggerated or completely out of proportion but the facts of it are pretty interesting nonetheless
 
Fluid turbulence.

The part of the earth's core that generates the planet's magnetic field is a turbulent fluid.

Means that there is a pattern to the movement, but you can predict it only within certain broad limits.

Think of the surface of a sauce pan of boiling water. What it does in general is predictable. Heat it enough and it boils.

Simple. More heat, boils faster.

But pick a spot on the surface and then predict when a bubble or ripple will appear exactly there.

And for how long.

An immense effort has gone into constructing math that can model turbulent fluids. Some way to predict what will flow where and when.

Kinda like predicting the weather. And that's how the branch of mathematics called "chaos theory" arose. A guy named Lorentz figured out that you can narrow down a prediction of the weather. But you can only narrow it down just so much. His ambition was to have a numerical model of the atmosphere's motion as it transfers heat from the equator to the poles.

Convective and turbulent fluid motions inside the sun bring about the so-called 11-year (about) sunspot cycle. In fact, it's a 22-year (more or less) long cycle. The polarity of the sun's north-south magnetic field flips at sunspot minimum, the sunspot count rises, falls, reaches a minimum and it flips back 11 years later. Solar astronomers refer to the polarity of the heliomagnet as "positive" for what we call "north" and negative for what we call the south side of a magnet. Keeps the top and bottom of the sun's mass "north" and "south", whatever which way the heliomagnet points at the moment.

Clever analysis of the sun's surface motion has revealed jet streams inside the sun. They oscillate between the poles and the equator. When they're close to the poles, you have more sunspots. When they're closer to the equator, the sun is quiet.

The fluid materials flowing around our planet's core take longer to oscillate like this, tens to hundreds of thousands of years.

Same song, different tempo.

There is more Iron and nickel in the core and mantle by far than there is found on the entire surface crust of the planet. No comparison - really. That's not it. Nice try.

Remember, pole reversal has occurred several times in the geological history that has already been determined. All on its own. Has nothing to do with our use of iron.
