Why do some people think their old CB gear is worth so much? Sure there's sentimental value but you really can't put a price on that can you?

I see radios for sale all the time that rival (and often exceed) the price of a brand new Galaxy or other export.
Yes, I understand that some radios, such as the Cobra 2000, are no longer made and they truly are worth quite a bit, but there are other common models that are being advertised far more than they're worth. For example, I see used Cobra 29's advertised for more than you can buy it brand new at the local truck shop.

Do these sellers ever bother to look at today's prices? Maybe it's a wife-thing. The lord (ess) of the house said it has to go and he prices it to make sure it will never sell. She doesn't really know what it's worth so this is his way of keeping it?

See dear... nobody wants to buy it... so I might as well keep it.

It's been this way for a while now, even more so on flea bay.
As soon as you see the word vintage, runaway.
Best deals are second hand stores, yard sales,craigslist and I have found good deals at pawn shops down in the Valley at times.
My brother bought a whole cardboard box full of radios the other day at a garage sale, 2 cobra 29's some Johnson mobiles, a few cobra 19 a Uniden 510 a Midland and some hand mics.
Talked the guy down to $20.

I think too, a lot of the older radios have a better build. Not only that, the through the hole components which make them somewhat more repairable if need be as opposed to surface mount.
The china radios have had a lot more problems in my experience than other makes in the past.
I think there used to be a little more pride in the making of the older radios, as well as more competition to make radios better. None of that really exists today.
And too, the radios are selling, so people are buying at those prices. Some rarity on certain radios like the exports may be a factor as well as not too many had really been brought in as they never really were selling main stream in the past.
Just my opinion.

i have a notebook with a list of my stuff with prices next to them
i know what i paid because i wanted it at the moment I've told my son where the list is if and when the time comes i even put bought new or use still have boxes

Not just radio gear..almost anything these days. People think cause it’s old/vintage it’s worth a lot…just old junk.

My children have started to get into Retro Gaming- they figured out some of the older games are not made anymore. Same thing is happening with video games on E-bay. Certain games are rare. Different systems have different value. Some sellers are laughable at prices. 40 year old electronics are just that 40 year old electronics. We have a local guy who makes a pretty decent go of running a used video game store. The show was an old GC Murphy at one time. He tests all the systems for two weeks then will give you a month warranty. He wants the repeat business and kind words. Seeing Atari 2600s on E-Bay for a few hundred dollars is laughable. Garage sales are way to go for old video games and CB Radios.

Prices for CBs started climbing about 2 years ago, the same time as sunspot cycle 25 began. When the cycle ends in 2030, CB prices will fall off the cliff again.
When the skip is running, people want to buy CBs. When the skip dies ... so do CB sales.

Most of what I am currently using is old stuff: Realistic TRC 490 Navaho SSB base purchased in 1981; Uniden PC 122 from the 90s; Cobra 148 GTL made in 1992; and a Cherokee AH 100 w/t that is about 25 years old. I ran a 1977 Johnson 4740 SSB mobile as my base until it died. I'll probably run the others until the go to the big CB truck stop in the sky.

I did have a guy offer me a premium for the Cherokee, but I turned it down. An SSB w/t for CB is indeed a unicorn. It stays...at least for now.
