I swear I can barely hear anything at the qth... unless you count noise... on 20m on the dipole a can barely hear other stations... on my vertical I hear even worse as the noise floor on 20m jumps up to s9 even s9+ (compared to s6 or s7 on the dipole)

More noise closer to homes, buildings, power lines etc. Also since a mobile antenna is smaller and less efficient it tends to picl up less of everything including noise.

How does your mobile compare to your base when it is parked in your yard? That is the real question that needs to be answered as it would then be subject to the same noise levels etc. as your base. You may have poor grounding or other issues on your base.

Most man-made noise and natural things like lightning are vertically polarized. That tends to explain why the vertical is noisier. What's causing the noise? That's your next great quest. The process has been described many times on this forum and others, but first see if it's coming from your house. If it is, fix it. If not, widen the search.

I was able to get some video of he noises... turns out the first thing I found was that my Buttfunk UV5R charger was making some interesting hash on 2m...

then I found that one of the wireless routers in the house was wiping out portions of 10m, weird thing is as soon as I unhooked one of he cable to a hard wired device it got quieter, and when I removed the other cable the RFI went away in full...

so I sill dont know why I am getting wiped out by static ESP on 20m

Listening to noise don't sound like much fun to me, but I get it sometimes too.

Since your mobile does about the same in your drive way, it could be you're in a dead spot. But, on-the-other-hand it seems as though you would have already known that before...unless you just put up your station recently.

To tell the truth though, I don't hear near as well anymore either, but it could be a serious lack of traffic. I think two-way radio is rapidly dying on the vine. I live in Houston, and I talked to a guy in a mobile just today. He said I was the only station on 27.385 lsb that he had heard for 50 miles coming from the Texas Valley and heading home east of town.

CB seems to be dying out just about like the hula hoop craze did.
