More noise closer to homes, buildings, power lines etc. Also since a mobile antenna is smaller and less efficient it tends to picl up less of everything including noise.

How does your mobile compare to your base when it is parked in your yard? That is the real question that needs to be answered as it would then be subject to the same noise levels etc. as your base. You may have poor grounding or other issues on your base.
