Try not to laugh to hard because I've had No Ham training or experience with ham radios. Today I was looking at radios with 10,12 meters,FM & CW and got to wondering if like they say the SHTF which would be better to have the 10 or the 12 meter radio. I know I've heard of them converting 10 meter radios to run 11 meter band but can they covert 12 meter over to 11 meter. If it ever got to the point of the SHTF I wouldn't worry about a ham license if it meant survival. Just a passing thought because the radios I looked at seemed reasonable priced and a guy could pick up FM also. Have at it ! LOL

I have never seen or heard any activity on 12.
That is interesting,so it tells me that 12 meter would be the band to convert to 11 meter if it could be done. It will be interesting to hear some old time radio guys chime in. I'm never too old to learn new tricks.

Just one opinion.... I think 10m would be the way to go.
My Icom 7300 does 160,80,40,20,17,15,12 and 10.
I have never seen or heard any activity on 12.

Let's see if some other opinions come in.....
lowest common denominators are 11m and GMRS/FRS.
Real communication will be HF bands , 160, 80,40 , 20m. There will be stubborn hold outs on 2m and 70cm until the backup power runs dry. The wild card as always is 6m .

So for my $$ and sense M0NKA, uBitx, uSDX, and/or any QRP general coverage xcvr that is widely community supported. a PLL02A or uPD858, MB8719, a few blister back crap radios.
Solar panels until the batteries evaporate ....

These threads are always entertaining. What type of SHTF….Nuclear…Foreign…Chemical…Domestic…Our own government. We’ve all seen what happens at the local grocery store when people panic over COVID, Winter Storms or Severe Weather. Take that geometrically and well maybe we get an idea of what bad really is. This won’t be some Red Dawn moment.

Communications will be important, but most will be SOL when the power grid goes down or the Energizer Bunny dies.

If you’re "bugging out" how much can you realistically bring with you and how far are you going to get on jammed highways with everyone else trying to get out?

Me thinks I’ll just stay put at my own homestead watching “True Grit” or “Outlaw Josey Wales” until the generator gives out or the front door gets blown in. A couple of propane tank surprises at the only two doors into my homestead that won’t be needed as I’m dying of radiation poisoning or some chemical agent in the air.

Heck if this is really the end, I’m gonna go in style. Good movie, Wings, Jägermeister, a good Cuban Cigar I’ve been saving for just such a moment, comforts of a good woman. Not crawling around on the ground gasping for my last breath.
