sink the stinger all the way to the bottom and measure swr on 1 & 40, if it's higher on 40 than it is on 1 then it will need to be cut. that should be done at the bottom of the stinger. if by some weird chance the swr should be higher on 1 than on 40 pull the stinger all the way up as far as you can while still being able to lock it with the setscrew. if 1 is still higher than 40 you'll need a longer stinger in that particular mounting location. never remove more length from the stinger than the length inserted and you'll never have to worry about cutting it too short. if 40 is now higher than 1 try shortening it by unlocking the setscrew and lower it about an 1/8 of an inch at a time and recheck swr at each interval until swr ch1 = swr ch40. that should leave a nice dip in the curve right thru the middle channels with the steepness of the curve dependent on the broadbandedness of the antenna in question.
