How is key pad programming on these?

I'm looking at either this one:

KG-UV6D-2.5 (full range coverage for commercial users) $175.00
2.5 kHz Tuning Step* - compliant with new FCC rules for Land Mobile Service
2.5 kHz Tuning Step available via Keypad and Software
TX & RX - 136-174 & 420-520 (frequency range can not be changed by owner

Without buying the cable...OR this one:

KG-UV6D-IC1 Ham Version (full range receive, ham band only transmit) $140.00
5 kHz Tuning Step* from the keypad - the standard for Amateur Radio
*Software will store frequencies requiring 2.5 kHz Tuning Step into Memory
RX - 136-174 & 420-520
TX - 144-148 & 420-450 (frequency range can not be changed by owner)

With the cable to allow narrow band programming as I have a few stations with 2.5 kHz in my area i want to monitor.

The third version available is with mars.

I recently picked up 2 KG-UV6X and I also specifically bought the programming cable because of the reported hideous keyboard programming that would be required otherwise.

Some people may like it, but I'm much more of a point-n-click guy.
The programming cable was the best thing I've bought :)

Using the software for the radios is pretty straight forward and some radio-friends and I have already started sharing the Save files back and forth to share our configurations.

My 2 cents? Spend the money on the cable; you won't regret it.

Spend the $15 on the cable. The programming on the keypad on these radios isn't that difficult, but it's SOOOO much better when you have the cable.

Thanks all, i am really liking this talkie...
and you definitely need the cable in order to push some functions to the talkie.

For example the kHz spacing cannot be done from the key pad.(hopefully it not just my radio! LOL)

overall every thing is easier to select on your software and then push to the talkie.

If you don't need that 2.5 Khz spacing for narrow banding for Part-90 then the UV-6 is not the best deal in the world, the '2' or '3' will do the same things. I will say that the antenna that comes with the '6' is an improvement on those supplied with the other models. It's still a rubberduck though, so don't expect 'miracles'.
The Wouxun HTs are certainly usable radios for Part-90 stuff, and being maybe 1/10th the cost of others, I like them. Because they also work for the ham bands, that's just an 'extra' that's nice too.
