Hello

I've been studying hard to get my technician license, and I scored a FT-209RH Handie for $12. I am having a hard time getting it work. I use the up or down key to scan and all I here is static. Also when i rotate the volume knob to a certain point it gets very loud and static filled. Am I just not using it right? Or is it in need of repair?

Any input on the radio would be appreciated.

Thank you.

EDIT:
Also, the audio output is extremely low, and all I get is static, nothing else. Could the antenna be bad?

Does the squelch adjust to kill the static? Get a friend to help you out and have them transmit nearby and see if you can receive them. That should help get you started to see if the thing can receive anything.

The squelch does kill the static, but the loud static when you turn the volume pot is still there. Some electronics cleaner was sprayed on the pot and the audio output is extremely low. But through some headphones I heard some talking, it was very faint, and it was in the static but it was there. Could it be a bad pot, or a bad speaker? at least I know it receives.

So basically, it's receiving but the volume is extremely low.
