I had one years ago and had it for several years. There nice radios but they are getting very old which also means very used When anyone is thinking of purchasing one of these there are a number of things to consinder / lookout for so caution is needed.
Stay very far away. I was not that great when new. Now it is hard to find someone to work on them when they break, and they will.

you have the CIV cable confused.
you need an INTERFACE to do any digital modes
get a RASCAL and the proper cable
the CIV cable allows control of the rig by a computer but it does NOT provide for digital mode operation
Well the radio and cable was built long before HRD was ever thought of. There were several other programs that would run the radio via the CIV cable. As said above you do not need the CIV cable for digital modes except maybe to operate the PTT function but there are other ways around that as well.
Ide have to go through my Manuals and dig the FT-757 manual out and look I am thinking maybe something for Packet ETC. Also Burghardt amateur radio repair works on these aswell as all older rigs and does an outstanding job with a fast turnaround time
