The stock Mic should sound virtually indistinguishable from a Heil PR781. If it sounds bad, it's time to find a new technician or plug in an Astatic 575m6 and crank up the treble so the low end distortion isn't heard.

Just got one off eBay for mine.Astatic 575
Really?I've tried no less than 6 different mics including a D104M6B, RD104E, SR-198 636L, as well as numerous other microphones and found the original stock Mic to have the highest output according to a modulation meter and scope.
I hate that as wellFriend of mine said mine sounded best with the Uniden BC645, and it does not jump back one channel with that mic, but you lose the channel buttons.
Stock mic definitely has good modulation. It's the dang puff sounds that ruin it. Have to talk across it, and then I still hear the puff sounds every now and then when I use talkback for tests.
