What will make a stock radio randomly turn off...

So...both on my old CB (cobra 19ultra 3) and now on my Galaxy 979F...the CB will sometimes randomly cut off....after a while, I can turn it back on again...but it's really annoying. My SWR is 1.1 on ch1, and 1.3 on Ch 40. I'm running a NMO Wilson 5000 antenna. My power leads are going straight from my battery on both positive and negative.

Any ideas?

If it happened on your old radio - and it's happening on your new radio there is an issue with your power leads from the battery to the radio.

How are you connecting your radio power cord to the power leads from the battery? Wire nuts? Powerpole connectors? Electrical tape?

What gauge wire did you run from the battery to the radio power cord?

Is your run of power from the battery to the radio fused in addition to the fuse on the radio power cord?

I also just thought.....if the outside of the pl259 connector is occasionally touching the metal frame of the vehicle could that cause issues or no? I never really thought of it like that before and thought I'd ask....regardless I'm gonna replace the power leads and the fuse. Also is it better to have a short ground directly to the chassis or is it better to have a longer ground going directly to the battery or does it even matter?

Short ground to the chassis is better if possible but for power to a standard radio the battery will work fine as well as your battery is also grounded to the chassis.

Your coax connectors shouldn't have any effect on the power to the radio.
