was wondering if my friend could run his 120 amp power supply in his van hooked up to an inverter. if can, how big of an inverter should he get. Aloha.

It is a server type power supply.

Yes he could but why? Is this some kind of high voltage power supply? If you are powering a 120 amp power supply with an inverter it will take more than 120 amps from the vehicle to power the inverter. It's not efficient or logical. There should be a rating on the power supply to tell you how many watts or amps it needs.

He was just wondering if he could bypass the Alternator route. It is a computer server power supply 120vlts @ 120amps. So no would be a good answer.

What is the output voltage from the server supply? Also the input voltage. You said 120 volts at 120 amps but that does not sound right at all. I have a 60 amp server supply and it requires 240 volts to operate it. Output is 50 volts. In any event the answer is NO. Even a 10 amp draw at 120 volts from an inverter would require over 100 amps from the vehicle battery and would require a 1.5 kilowatt inverter as a minimum. Throw on the fact that most inverters do not produce a pure sine wave and all hell breaks loose with a lot of electronics.

Well looks like a waste of time and money to go that route. Thanx everyone for the reply. Aloha, 1-5minigrass.
