dual band 144/440

Stick to the three majors, Icom Yaesu, Kenwood and you can't go wrong. They really don't make bad radios, just a matter of the interface and features and if you like them.

My .02, you can't go wrong with an FT-7800R for a basic dual-band radio, I really like mine.

If you have the cash, the TMD710A from Kenwood is the Cadillac and it's awesome.

Still stick with Icom , yaesu or Kenwood

Myself
I have Icom T-90A
(an exellent HT and very easy to use)
Has 2 and 6 meter as well as 70cm

Also have Icom IC-91AD also Exellent HT with added DStar usage
Has 2 meter and 70cm

Also have Kenwood THF6A
(my least favorite but very nice HT)
Has 2 and 1.25 meters as well as 70cm

Guess it depends on what bands and or operating modes you want and or need

i ment for portables? not looking bad mobile radios i'll take them into some looking to!!!!

Ah my favorite entry level basic portable is the Yaesu FT-60R. It's the handheld equivalent to the 7800R I also recommend. All the basic functions, easy to program, full power for a handheld and good battery life. They are also built almost as solid as a full commercial radio. It's a dual-band HT, 2m and 70cm in it.

I also own a VX-7R which I also like quite a bit as do I like the VX-6.

You pretty much can't go wrong with handhelds these days either, it's more about your budget and the features you want.

I would recommend you get a dual-band at minimum though. 2m/70cm(440)

if you are looking solely for a dual band HT

Icom's IC-91D is a exellent HT
very easy to program and use (without even reading manual)

Yaesu's VX-6. i have heard a lot of good things about
but the VX7R is not very user friendly (especially for newer users)

Icoms T90A is a tribander
but its price is very low and extremely easy to use and program
and for years many thought
when i was on my T90A that i was a base
(although i use it with external mike and high gain antenna)
I still can hit a repeater with it 70 miles away on street level
and that is from nj passing over and through nyc on out to long island
(when i met a few from the long island group they barely believed i was using a simply HT)
Although there is 1 flaw to the T90A and it is its eating batteries
it goes 4 hours tops
(but i have 5 batteries and so is fine by me,including one that lasts days)
