Stray RF and Mic base

EDUK8TR

Active Member
MY MC-60 Kenwood mic base is picking up stray RF from my amp and causing a Squeal in my TX. Goes away when I take the mic off the base and use it direct into the radio using the on/off switch to key the radio. I tried putting several ferrite chokes in line. One inside the base where the wires come off the preamp board to the female connector. The other I put on the mike cord from the base to the mic. I put yet another by wrapping the coiled cord around the choke. Still got the squeal. How can I track this down and get rid of it? The amp works and sounds great with my HR2600 and turner +3 and no squeal. Any other suggestions?

Thanks!!

whenever i use kenwood or adonis mic's i make another lead from radio to mic from fully foil shielded 9 core cable, i fold the shield/drain wire back and trap it under the cable clamping bridge at either end so the mic body is grounded to radio chassis and the whole cable is shielded, just use one of the other 9 wires for the mic ground in the 8 pin plug, no buzzing or squealing its worked every time for me. good luck hope you get it sorted

Thanks for the reply UK. Now I just need a source for the needed wire and ends.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/eek.gif ALT=":eek">

Thanks W5LZ,

Ran a ground wire from the mic base to the radio chasis. Now the squeal is gone. Now I'm dealing with a slightly scratchy audio. Never had any of these problems with my 2600.

I've owned that mic, and had the same problem, and when I did get it working, it still didn't sound good, I personally would buy a Heil Goldline, and just be done with it. The Kenwood mic for some reason had a problem with a ground loop if i remember correctly.

OK, gonna pick your brains again on this. I made up a new mike cord which is shielded and has a ferrite choke on each end
ohwell.gif
. I have also installed a Heil HC-5 element as well
posticon51.gif
. I'm still encountering the scratchy audio problem
mad.gif
posticon60.gif
. After re-reading the posts here I wonder if unsoldering the center pin which is the ground will make any difference
posticon53.gif
. Are there any modifications to the base of the mike which would make any difference?

Thanks for all the advice to date.

"have you used the shield/drain wire to ground the mic by trapping it under the mic plug cable grip at each end of the cable?,, have you tried removing the ferrite chokes, they can effectivly isolate the path for rf back to the radio and render youre grounding useless, good luck "

UK,

Yes I have the shield trapped under the cable grip at each end
posticon55.gif
and they are making good mechanical contact because I removed the ground wire that I had previously installed as mentioned in one of my posts above. The ferrite chokes slide along the outside insulation of the the cable. I realy don't want to have to take them off because that will require unsoldering and resoldering one of the ends.
posticon60.gif
I didn't think that they would interfere with the operation of the mike.
posticon53.gif
I had hoped that they would knock out any of the RF which I believe is causing my problem.

"The 'scratchiness' is usually a sign of a mechanical problem, something loose, the mic element, or a connection somewhere. Pad the mic element in the holder, which is a good idea anyway. Make sure all the 'screw-on' connections/conectors are friction tight. You don't need to use a pipe wrench on them, though. I've found that some 8-pin connectiors (the 4-pins too) are loose in the jack even when tightened, just have to live with that."

Doc,

The scratchiness in my audio only occurrs with the amp on and is not the result of any mechanical problem. Which is my major concern at this point.
ohwell.gif
Without the amp on audio reports are crystal clear.
posticon36.gif
I do not encounter this problem when using the amp with my HR 2600 with a Turner +3 desk mike.

Doc wrote:

"The problems with the 'MC' series of microphones dealt mainly with grounding/shielding. There was an article in the old "Ham Radio" magazine about a 'cure' for that, lots of bypass caps in the amplifier circuit and circuit board to chassis connections (that was a very long time ago, doubt if you could find it now?)."

Doc,

I did find a mod at the mods.dk site but didn't really quite understand it. See it here Remove RFI in the MC60

If you don't mind look at this for me and see if you can explain better what this mod entails.

"Another 'quick'n'dirty' solution was to ground pin 8, depending on the radio used. Pin 8 is audio ground, and pin 9 is chassis ground (again, if I remember correctly). That isn't/wasn't such a good idea cuz' it made the radio chassis part of the 'audio' circuit, along with anything touching the radio. "

Doc,

The pin outs as described in my annotated 430S Manual are as follows:

1 MIC

2 STBY

3 DOWN

4 UP

5 +8v "annotation"

6 RX Aud "annotation"

7 GND MIC

8 GND Connection (STBY)

Perhaps this will help a little as to which of the GND's I need or don't need.

Sorry for the long post but I felt it necessary to help you guys understand what I am encountering. The bottom line is that I want use this Transceiver mic combination with my MF900 amp.

Again

Doc,

I linked the wrong mod.
posticon60.gif
This is the one I wanted you to look at. Sorry MC 60 Mod. Hate when that happens.

Give a look at this and see if you can better explain it to me.

Well I've got some snap on ferrite chokes ordered. I'll put them on the jumpers in my setup and see if that works next.
