Wilson 5000 - How broad banded?

I'm hoping someone can save me a lot of cutting and tuning trying to answer this question...

I've got a Wilson 5000 that I use strictly for road trips monitoring CB/19. With 10M going nuts, I'm considering adding a 10M radio to my truck. I'm HOPING someone's going to tell me that the 5000 will tune both 10 & 11 meters, to save me from having to find room for another antenna.

Well yes it will work but you will only get the fringes of 27 and 28 mhz and as long as the swr is within tolerances of your radio I would say try it but it is like at least 1 full mhz between the frequencies you mention.
 
There's a penalty with broadbanded antennas. That penalty is in efficiency, meaning that as you get further from the design frequency the antenna works less well. It'd still produce a signal, just not a very good one. They can have a very nice SWR, but that doesn't mean it's working well.
I think since you don't have an antenna mounted all the time, just on trips, why not two antennas?

i've read that a lot over the years from different people/sources and i don't recall anyone making a good case against it . but ... the gain master flies in the face of that . folks are reporting 4 1/2 MHZ of bandwidth without using a tuner from it and 1/2 to 1 s-unit (or more) of gain over their previous 5/8 .
 
Just carry an extra stinger cut for 10M. I have two stingers that are marked with a paint pen (marked at best SWR point). Just swap out stinger, adjust to where your mark is, tighten, and your on your way!! Or, you could buy a screwdriver antenna. But, I believe you would need to run a tunner as well.

I've tuned a Wilson trucker 5000 on my little dump truck more towards
28.3 but I've went up to the 28.6 area under 2:1 and I do ch 19 just fine. I get 3-5 miles with it, plenty for traffic reports. I get plenty of contacts using my magnum 357 on 10 as well.

i have not got around to it, but I have plans to cut the top portion of a 102 whip down and use it on the wilson 5k for 10 meters,

I plan to cut it at about 57 1/4 or 57 1/2 inches to give me some room to match. Wilson recomends a 57 inch whip for 10 meters at 28.5 mHz

I'm on "trips" a couple of days a week, but I'm not a fan of the magnet mount with the coax running in the rear window, etc... That's the only reason it's not on the roof all the time. It never fails that the antenna's in the back seat when I hit a traffic snarl. What got me started thinking about this is the fact that the truck's about to go in for a headliner, so I'm seriously thinking about just biting the bullet, punching a hole in the roof and cleaning up the coax/install.

The more I think about it, the more I realize how long it's been since I've actually keyed the CB. Seems like I haven't done it since I got my ticket... Funny how that happens. lol I guess I'm looking more to talk on 10 and hear on 11, so based on the replies I think I'll give it a go.

Since I use the Galaxy Export radio in my vehicle, I use the Sirio Z-180. It has a 2:1 VSWR of 1.1mHz. It works both 10 and 11m. But the Wilson1000 I have has a range of .8mHz @ 2:1 VSWR. I made those measurements with an MFJ-258B antenna analyzer BTW . . .

EDIT:
I would choose a 1/4 wave steel whip for your solution, as it is very broadband and can easily be trimmed to your exact needs for working both bands. Either that, or you can build your own as shown here:

That's pretty magical. I have a cantenna that has a 1.2:1 bandwidth of about 30 Mhz but doesn't receive worth a crap no matter where I mount it :D

Mobile antennas are pretty inefficient to begin with so, as a few have already said, broadbanded is not a good choice. You want at least some of your precious mobile power radiating and not being lost to heating a loading coil and ground losses. I would go with a seperate antenna for each band.

Then again, band conditions are at a point now on 10/11 m where you can work the world on a wet noodle and 2 watts (pep)...well, almost there. I worked a CO6 on the way to work this morning on a 102" whip and 4 watts pep. Gotta love it. (y)

Based on this measurement data and the requirements posted that he wants 27.185 and the lower part of 10m (just got his license), there should be no problem moving the stinger to a position that allows a less than 2:1 SWR between 27.185 and 28.5. The <2:1 SWR bandwidth shown above is 1.35Mhz. The difference between 28.5 and 27.185Mhz is 1.315Mhz.

It sure looks doable to me.
