Presidents " new" private channels.

This scam has been around forever. The old VHF radiotelephone system that was used up here in Canada in the 70's and 80's was marketed with a promise of "privacy" during communication. All that meant was that CTCSS tones stopped the persons conversing from hearing other conversations.......it did nothing to stop any old Joe with a scanner from hearing both sides of the conversation LOL!

Motorola's original trade name for CTCSS was "Private Line" or "PL". On a FM land-mobile channel with three plumbers and two electricians licensed to use it, the "private" part meant you didn't have to listen to the other users. They could hear everything if they chose, same as you could. Made the receptionist's office quieter, though. Makes me wonder if Uniden copies the other part of the CTCSS protocol. The base mike had a second push switch marked "monitor". You were supposed to press this and listen first before keying the transmit button. Some mikes had a mechanical interlock that kept the transmit button from working unless the monitor button was pushed first. This was to prevent you from stepping on another user with a different tone. The monitor button disabled the tone-only quieting so you could hear any traffic on the channel already underway. Mobile radios used a wire in the mike cord connected to the metal hangup button. When vehicles had metal dashboards, the button would be grounded when hung up. This turned on the receiver's tone-only squelch. Idea was when you picked up the mike it broke the ground circuit and the tone-only feature would turn off, so you could hear who you stepped on if you went ahead and keyed the mike. Naturally the protocol was meant to make it easy to wait your turn. Gotta wonder how Uniden would make that part of the picture.

Probably didn't.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of FM operators on 26.805FM. That is the international FM calling channel, and has been since the 1980's.
If you want to hear or talk FM mode on 11 meters that's where people doing that are!
You can scan the regular 40 all day long and you probably won't hear any FM mode being used, I certainly never have.
I've made several hundred contacts on 26.805FM in the last couple of years, all over North America, as well as Ireland, Mexico, Australia and Alaska.

Just as an aside, FM also works VERY well locally. I've done extensive testing here running a 5555N2 on my base (with an A99), and a 6666 in my SUV (with a 3 foot firestick) and FM massively outperforms AM and is almost as good locally as SSB.
I get about 15 miles max on AM mode, almost 40 miles on FM, and about 60 on SSB, running base to mobile.

Johnson radio called it the Tone alert slective calling system for cb radios. When the black face messanger II came out the tone alert accessory was a option.
It was a external unit the screwed to the side of the radio and hooked up to a socket on the back of the radio.

Our commercial radios in our work trucks used tone squelch... I remember well the horn on my pickup honking away at 2AM because something was broken and I did not answer the landline..
before everyone had them cell phone things.

My wife bought me a cellphone when I was commuting to and from work, about 60 miles one way. I kept it in the car, but turned off. Meanwhile I had a 2 meter radio on while making the trip. I still have an expensive land line, and I can be reached there...unless I'm not home, then leave a message and I'll get back to ya.
However my 91 year old mom keeps her cellphone at the ready and embraces it. I personally like the freedom of not having one, and now I'm retired, it sits on the kitchen counter.
