Got an old classic Cobra 142 GTL on the desk.
Issue:
Transmit low in all modes
Receive low in all modes
Controls/switches scratchy
Variable key not functioning correctly
Decided to do a complete recap first. Upon removing the old caps, I noticed the C92 location had a 330uf 16v cap instead of...
My PEP meter shows 50w max swing.
My Peak meter shows 35w max swing.
Neither meter has ever been opened. I bought them both brand new myself. My oscope corresponds very close to my Peak meter, after converting from AC volts to watts.
I've never seen any other old president on my desk doing 50w...
Got an old school two button President Washington (upd858 PLL), with an old school 1306 driver and an old school 1307 final on the desk.
Issue:
Blows fuses once turned on.
Cause:
All caps, every single cap was shot.
Fix:
Recapped entire radio, even power supply and button board.
After fixing...
Got a Galaxy DX 2517 (mosfet version) on the desk. One of my previous works.
Issue:
Owner claims the frequency counter would switch through frequencies all by itself while just receiving. Did not affect the actual receive or transmit frequency, radio still received and transmitted on right...
Well, I noticed after talking on it for a bit that the carrier was fluctuating slightly. So I reset the keys to 8w to 40w as per someone else's recommendation.
So far, holds at 40w the entire time of talking, sled amp gets slightly hot after 20 minutes of long winded talking, cools back down...
Well, I had to put the 10k ohm resistor back across the AMC limiter.
Without the resistor, the radio makes a terrible buzz sound with your audio when keyed up at any carrier level which peaks out the output.
With the resistor, the buzz sound goes away and audio sounds great.
Any advice on...
Got a Connex CX-4600 Turbo on the desk today for just a checkup after 4 years of being stored.
After warming up for 30 minutes:
Hi deadkey = 75w, WOW!!!
Lo deadkey = 25w, WOW!!!
PEP swing at any deadkey level = 225w
Peak swing """"" = 165w
Average swing """""" = 92w
Found a diode alone...
Just got finished working on an old Galaxy Saturn (ept3600 board) that had some receive issues.
AM receive was ok, not the best in the world.
AM meter had to be cranked almost wide open.
SSB receive was weak, it was there but volume had to be turned up halfway just to hear people.
SSB meter...
Just posting on my review of the new RCI-29 base radio.
Two of my local friends joined together and bought 2 of the RCI-29 bases from Anderson Radio Supply located in SC. They had to place a pre-order about 3 weeks ago for the radios.
Well, the radios finally arrived at their homes. One guy...
Got a Connex CX-3300HP on the desk today with low VCO voltage.
Cannot get the VCO voltage up to 3.20v. it'll go up to 2.19v and then drop out or start dropping back down.
Issue with radio is, frequencies are all out of whack.
10.2398mhz measured on pin 4 of the PLL.
15.23??mhz measured at TP3...
Yes, he tested his jumpers and they were fine, he used new ones anyway, same result.
C199 maybe?
I think there is mention of the galaxy 44v aquirring an oscillation on transmit audio which turns out to be C199.
It's on the archived version of cbtricks under galaxy symptoms and cures.
Not...
I'll check with him and ask.
I hear it myself also when I'm listening, it doesn't cover his voice up but it's there.
Same d104 he uses on all his 4 pin radios, only thing is he has to turn the mic itself down to almost off and the mic gain down to almost off to get it to stop, but then he has...
Well, we have an issue with this Saturn again.
Radio receives great, all functions work great, transmits great barefoot, but when you flip ANY amp on then there is a constant tone (I would have to say 600hz maybe 800hz). Tone does get louder with more mic gain. No limiters or swing mods in this...
I put this one on the shelf until I can gather all the caps and resistors, plus so I could get some of these others done while I'm waiting for parts.
The realistic 457 is on the back burner also.
I've seen a ham operator once take an sb220 and spray the inside (top and bottom) with simple green, then proceeded to use a water hose to clean the inside, lol.... People do some silly stuff.
I left it at 68k ohms. Doesn't seem to be harming anything and the radio runs cooler. Audio is very sensitive to every syllable, holds at max power the entire time speaking, no drop backs at all on certain words/syllables.
Update:
Replaced the diode in the R238 location with a 5.1k ohm 1% tolerance resistor (need to order more 5% tolerance resistors).
Reinstalled the limiter at the TR32 location with a new 2SC945.
Replaced both Chinese brand 1000uf caps with Nichicon 2200uf 25v caps.
Replaced the 330uf 16v...
