If you were a pirate broadcaster, what's playing right now?

The late great Buddy Rich. I ran across Buddy Rich, one of the greatest jazz drummers of the past and present IMO. My dad loved the Big Bands. Consequently he acquired many cassettes, Guy Lombardo, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, etc . I wax nostalgic about them dancing as I have been...

    electronic cleaner spray can prices

I prefer Deoxit Fader Spray for most pots and occasionally Deoxit Fader Grease for those old AM transistor radio volume controls. Note: The Deoxit spray cans come in two types, old school straw applicator, and the new flip-up applicator style. IMO I originally thought the new flip-up type...

If you were a pirate broadcaster, what's playing right now?

I’m a huge fan of Tiny Desk Concerts. That's where I discovered them a few years ago. If you like something new with surprises. They’re always supporting upcoming talented artists as well as many older bands that are not yet in the mainstream.

If you were a pirate broadcaster, what's playing right now?

Paul Janeway was once a preacher and bank teller in Alabama. His seven-piece band from Birmingham has been playing since 2012, and is still selling tickets. The Broken Bones' music has heart and soul and flair. A voice like Ottis Redding, CeeLo Green, and I hear a bit of Ed Sheeran in some of...

What have you done today to be prepared?

I started recapping and servicing all the old boom boxes, plus small AM/FM transistor radios that were rescued from my relations years ago. It’s been fun studying all the different obsolete, but still replaceable audio chips that they used in many of them. Fortunately I found enough telescopic...

    Smokey and the CB

Years ago both our local police and the state police that covered our area had CB’s installed in their vehicles and bases, but CB was never used in dispatch or in any official capacity. I helped install a share amount of those CB’s. We even had a state police officer that used a CB walkie as...

C Crane Skywave SSB or Non SSB Versions Your Thoughts

To become proficient with tuning SSB there is a bit of a learning curve, but well worth the effort. You will also find that SSB mode is also helpful in tuning in weak AM or AM stations that are plagued with interference.

10 Meters Wide Open for the ARRL 10 M Contest

I haven’t heard so many CW stations on 10 in years. Unlike the past, very little QRS operators, straight keys, bugs are being represented. 99.9% high speed keyboards equipped with CW readers. Real CW?? Makes me wonder how many of them actually know any code beyond 5 wpm. I loved the old...

Why are mobile CB radios stuck in the 70s?

After you spent that money pairing those choices together you may decide the Cobra 78X or 29GTL was a mistake. The Handic 235 rules the world of orange.

AM High power broadcasting stations in the USA. Which do you listen to?

In the mid 50’s I grew up in the corn fields, 60 miles south of Chicago listening to WLS. Kids with their 7 transistor AM only radios sang along on my bus to such hits as Honeycomb and The Banana Boat Song. Later as time moved into mid 60’s, WLS played the “Chickenman” radio series. He's...

This could be trouble if in the wrong hands

I’m curious to know what radio they are using inside that older (much larger) version. I’m assuming it’s another Uniden Model. These are some photos of a little newer version. Basically it’s a 510xl. As you can see, the channel selector has been replaced with an internal recorder board and a...

    johnson transceiver tester question

That was one of the first meters I used in the field. The meter movement went bad early on with mine, and I understand that’s a common problem with these. Fortunately Johnson sold me a replacement. Nowadays I’m sure I’ll need a parts example if it needs another one. Realizing it’s not made for...

Uniden Grant 4 Button PC409ac TX on every other channel

This is the clearest schematic I have of the PC-409. Should be about the same as the base (ac) version. I wish it was better, but given a substandard scan, there’s only so much enhancement that can be accomplish. At least most parts are readable. If anyone else has a better copy, please post.

Recaping - Need Cap Lead Spacing

Does the 2510 have some unusual sized caps? Yes, but it’s not a necessity to replace them with exactly the same size dimensions. Doc never thought so, and neither do I. The 2510 has a number of very small caps. Depending on the circuit, Doc replaced many with larger sized ones that had a...
