Any time you shove a 400-600 watt amplifier inside an Export radio like that you will have drift. That's just the way they all are. The most stable Exports are processor controlled but they can drift some as well. The old school Galaxy 88 & 99 will drift like a sailboat on SSB. Especially in a...
A local has one of these. They are pretty much a low drive amp. Sounds good on AM and sounds like crap on SSB. They just don't seem to do well over all, he wishes he would have never bought it.
What is the SWR? Is everything right with your grounding and antenna system? Are your jumpers all good? I assume your running it at 13.8-14 volts?
Years ago a local had this problem in a mobile set up. It ended up being his Wilson 5000 mag mount. The mag mount ground was not good enough...
Years ago when radio's were mostly lower powered amp builders like X-Force, Magna Force, Davemade, Fatboy and so on all would build a 1 pill driver amp. Usually either a 2290 or 2879. Now there are so many powerful radios to choose from you don't need a driver amp.
I used to run a Uniden 122xl...
The Boomer, Gray, and Palomar 600 were class C 1x4 amps with the 1446 final. They were prone to oscillation and ran hot. If you talk SSB you will want a different amplifier for sure.
There is no "standard" range because there are many variables. The first rule is height is might. Next you want to run the best or biggest antenna you can to maximize range. Since your vehicle is the ground plane make sure your install is done correctly.
Two big factors that effect a mobile...
I can't seem to find a Ranger 6900 base plus radio. I know they make a 69 base. As I recall there are some threads here on that one. It did not seem to be that great of a radio and there were some complaints with the RT1 final it has. Here is a link...
LOL I remember the days when the KL-40, KL-60, and KL-203 were considered throw away amplifiers. They were so in-expensive unless you could fix it yourself you were money ahead just buying a new one.
Pretty cool for a Washington, I like it. Too bad it would not be practical for a shop to sell. 55 for the supply, 85 for the RFX, labor for the install and tune would be 100-130 ish. Then add some profit, probably cost 265-300 to have done.
