I have found that dirt and vegetation requires the rule height is might. Rock not as much. I have had many contacts with the fed point 8' above rock top hill ( ok mountain). Soiled topped I go min of 20' and 4 x the power.

Getting the rack to be really grounded with the vehicle can be a pain in the arse.
I had a few ham friend mount a few antennas on the rack of his GMC. Bonded various places and had problems. Finally got it done to bad swr when it went thru heavy rain storms.

The XYL's 979 does not drift.
It should be noted that most radios will drift alittle when they are going from sub-zero to normal operating temperature, which is the case for northern hemisphere mobiles.
