I have a 7200, it's a tuff little radio that just works. Simple to operate and mine has survived many portable operation. Wish it was still in production.
KU4MP
I got my hands on an old tube AM radio and would listen to the clear channel stations coming in at night, made me want to be a DJ. Back in the 60's I saw a FM transmitter kit in the Green stamp catalog, talked my grandmother out of enough books to get it.
That's what got me started since the...
I've purchased several things from them, most times it's been in stock and they shipped it right out. Only had one thing that was back order but I knew that before I placed the order. They sent me out email's updating about the status.
I ran ham sticks on 40, 20 & 10 and a original High Sierra screwdriver when I had my pickup, the ham sticks did just as well as the screwdriver as long as you didn't want to move around the band a lot. Have a Great Lakes 392 that I'm planning on trying on the car but haven't installed it yet so...
Back a few years ago the forestry service decommissioned a lot of the fire towers around here and rumor had it that they basically gave them away to some one that could take it down. I've always thought what a interesting shack one of those would have made.
Used to get on one of the repeaters back in WV where I lived for a while. It worked great and always got a comment from someone asking if I was in town so guess the audio quality was fine. It's interesting to pick a repeater some where in the world and just listen.
I had one of the newer 148's, voice warbled on SSB. Did OK on AM. Still have a 959, great AM rig, OK on SSB. Currently using a 980, rock steady on SSB, good receive, and nice features. Once you get rid of the beep it's the better of the 3 I've had.
Sorry to hear yours died so soon, new doesn't always mean it's going to be trouble free. I'm using one daily, got it right after they started selling them. Did the beep mode, unlocked the clarifier, cranked the dead key down and added a CR577 mic. Everyone says it's one of best sounding radio's...
Maybe I just got lucky but also never let anyone do a peak and tune on it. Seems a lot of the horror stories I heard were related to trying to squeeze every last watt out of the rig and then it going up in smoke.
Very true on keeping the golden screwdrivers from the RCI's. Let one of the clip this, max this, guys get a hold of it and it can turn into a splatter box big time. There's a operator near me running one that's been "peaked". It worked, I can hear him 40 channels away.
IMO If you're looking to work 10/11 it's hard to beat the various RCI rigs compared to spending a few more bucks and getting a multi band HF rig. I've tried them all, Alinco, Icom, Kenwood, Yaesu you name it, and have yet to see one of them have a noise filter that's worth squat when it comes to...
