For this mod to be "standalone" some form AMC/limiting feedback is necessary. NZ8N, I've never bothered using the diode/resistor labeled as AMC feedback, I've always left those out and do the processing/limiting externally. Following your highlight I see they are part of a feedback chain.

Schematic shows it's a variable capacitor near the driver tube. Check around, T700 (C707), the driver tube (R706, R705), one end goes to ground. Sorry I don't have any pics of the inside to point it out, I've never repaired or purchased one of these. Stay safe Crambone, don't let it bite you.
