Chameleon Vertical Antenna - 10-80 Meters

I also own the Chameleon Mil Whip and Mil Ext 2.0, and I am generally happy with it, but I do think the Chameleon products are pretty expensive. No one is forcing us to buy these products, so I am not complaining...only making an observation about the price. As an interesting alternative, I...

    MIKE OF MIKE'S RADIO REPAIR

I’m not sure what you looked up on QRZ, but I just looked him up and see that Mike of Mike’s Radio Repair just got his amateur radio license issued in the past few days. I knew he wasn’t licensed previously, but did hold a GMRS license IIRC. Seeing that Mike now has a ham license, I suspect he...

    Heil HMM hand mic

Heil used to make that style mic in three different flavors...Icom, Yaesu and Kenwood (with the appropriate letter following the HMM designation, i.e. HMM-Y for Yaesu). I have had two of the Yaesu mics over the years, and they had two mic elements in them, with a switch on the rear of the mic...

    New Uniden 980's on sale

I noticed the same issue on the last two 980’s I bought. These radios are the “new” board, and that seems to be a problem with them. I had two older board 980’s and that did not happen, but both new boards have “talkback” in an external speaker. Not really noticeable in the mobile, but...

    MIKE OF MIKE'S RADIO REPAIR

I seem to be the only one in this thread that has actually sent radios to Mike, since this thread started, and I already mentioned that he serviced them and returned them to me in about a week’s time (I live within a couple hours of Mike, so the shipping time was quick). I don’t think Mike is...

Xiegu G90 (repost in own thread)

I did the FW update to 1.71 yesterday on my G90...no issues. I updated the main body unit (xceiver) first, and then did the display unit (remote head). I agree that those having issues are probably experiencing operator error. I find the update to be pretty good. Seems that all the new features...

Local Police frequencies now encrypted, yet media outlets have access?

As I said previously, I was a police officer and I am opposed to encrypted communications...at least as far as dispatch comms. If you want to make the argument that tactical comms should be encrypted, in order to protect officers, that’s fine...but (and this is a big but !)... Your local media...

    MIKE OF MIKE'S RADIO REPAIR

I sent two scanners to Mike on Oct. 9 of this year (2019), and I received the email invoice within a week, and got the repaired/restored radios back on Oct 18. Very quick service. I had no direct contact with Mike, but just did what I have done in the past...sent the radios along with a note...

Xiegu G90 (repost in own thread)

I bought my Xiegu X1M back in 2014. Since then, they have released a number of other radios and an amplifier. The G90 is the one that is getting a lot of attention, because it offers a lot for the price/size. My old X1M was an interesting QRP rig that could actually fit in the pocket of cargo...

Which CB Shops are still accepting mail-in repairs?

I have to believe Mike just got overloaded with work from his YouTube channel. I just sent two older Bearcat scanners to him for restoration, so we’ll see if I hear from him when they’re done (I expect to hear from him). I figure he just stopped posting videos because it only created more work...

    6 meter Midland

I used to buy old commercial radios (Midland, Maxon, EFJ, etc.) and reprogram/re-tune them for the ham bands, and sell them at ham fests. The market died out for me after they got rid of the code requirement, and techs would buy HF/6m rigs, since they had phone privileges on 10m. Prior to that...

Xiegu G90 (repost in own thread)

That workaround does seem to TX out of band, but as you say, it is a bit clunky. I have had a G90 for several months and enjoy it, but it is not perfect. The biggest issue I have with mine is that I occasionally lose my receive, but when I cycle through the preamp button, the receive returns...

    Lincoln HR2510 - defective

Mike’s Radio Repair on YouTube has done a couple of videos on this subject. Here are two

    The new Mckinley

Thanks for the information on the McKinley EU. That clears up some questions. I also agree that the band programming in the President radios is a bit annoying, when stepping through the bands. It would be nice if it just did it sequentially.

    The new Mckinley

The US McKinley doesn’t have a VFO (pretty sure that’s true for the EU version as well). It also doesn’t appear to have a 5 kHz shift feature, which the Grant II does have. With that, I don’t think the McKinley EU would have a lot of use on amateur bands, or even on the frequencies beyond 40...

    Humm interesting

I think the GMRS license fee is now $70, and it is valid for 10 years, so $7/year. Better than the previous $85 for 5 year fee.

    Yaesu FT3DR

***rant warning*** I’m seeing list prices of nearly $600 for this radio. Of course, in typical Yaesu fashion, it will be discounted by hundreds of dollars after the first year or so of production, screwing all the people that buy in early. And I suspect Yaesu will continue it’s convoluted...

    Swapped the 857

DSP in the FT-891 is great for the mobile environment. I can filter out noise and just hear voice. Almost like listening to FM ! Ran an 857 for (more than 10) years in the mobile with the ATAS-120A and it worked well, but the 891 is even better. Don’t care about 2m/70cm anymore, since there is...

Power Supply Needed for Texas Star Amps??

I used to run a TS DX500v from the shack and powered it with an Astron 75 amp power supply. Not cheap, but it provided plenty of current with sufficient headroom to power the DX-500v without any problems. IIRC, I would see a current draw of between 40-45 amps on the front meter, at full output...

    Uniden Wireless Microphone?

Mike’s Radio Repair did a video on the President wireless mic, which is very similar to the Unden mic, but the President mic has a provided connector for receive audio to make connecting to a different radio a bit easier, however that mic is not offered for sale in the US at this time. (Guess...
