Anyone play with 11 meter SSTV? I know the upstanding hams will kill me for this, but does anyone think it would be fin to get a SSTV frequency going on 11M? Maybe an oddball frequency like 26.700 or 27.600 or something, USB. The only problem is I wonder how many rigs would actually work well...

Someone played with it because the transistors aren't original, and also the amplifier was built in Fullerton, CA.

Depends on how new / old it is. D203 is the mod limiter on the newer ones, and if it is a really new one, it is a surface mount diode mounted under a metal shield on the solder side of the board. The ones before 1999 or so were D14. Don't cut it! Add a 1K resistor in series. It will be PLENTY...

A couple of things... 1: If the radio was truely "tuned up" by someone who made it do that high of a carrier... whoops! 2: Sounds like if it's getting that hot, the gate voltage is way too high maybe in an attempt to get more power out of it... again, whoops! 3: Something I am surprised...

The ones with the built in transformer, with the unregulated supplies WERE NOT biased, and had the typical base-choke-ground arrangement. (class C) Although they had a SSB switch on them, it was a delay for the relays, nothing more. One *could* get away with driving them a little hard because...

No reason really....although on a technical level, maybe because with a transformer type radio, negative peaks are a little more suppressed then with the typical modulator set up in an export radio. Other than that, not much.

Exactly...forget velocity factor, and the fact that a 1/4 wave vertical sholdn't have a 52 ohm feed point impedance anyways, BUT as long as the SWRS are OK I guess... Or when people take a dipole, and lower the ends closer to the ground to bring the impedance down. Makes the SWR meter happy...

If you look inside of one, then put one on some real test equipment, and look at the junk these things put out... you'd call off of their series the "WTF series". JMO

Just an FYI - as you said, it is a variable capacitor. Then later, you referred to it as a pot. "pot" is short for potentiometer, or a variable resistor. A different animal. Not being picky, just helping so if you go to order the part, you get what you need.

Eisest way is just to remove BOTH chokes. At the point where both 25 ohm resistors connect to the meter lamp, insert your VCC (+13.8 volts) here, switched from the relay. Use the VCC bus on the side of one of the boards for that purpose. On the input of the relay for the 13.8 volts, use a .01uf...

Make a small TRF "crystal" radio. A coil, variable cap, and an earphone. Done. Then, make one that picks up AM radio stations, and learn some things, AND have fun in the process. No power required.
